After an incredible 2007 for women's football , Kelly Smith has been named England Women's Player Of The Year
Only Alex Scott matched Smith in playing all 14 games during the year , and the
Arsenal forward scored ten goals including four at the World Cup in China - England's first in 12 years.
Despite taking more than 40% of the fans vote Kelly Smith is keen to spread the accolades.
Smith explained :
" Last year was tremendous , but it wasn't down to one player it was a huge team effort and so many people deserve credit for our performances.
It's a great feeling to e acknowledged by the fans and get their support , and I'd like to thank everyone who voted foe me.
But this award isn't just for me , it's for everyone involved from the players , the coaches , the scouts , the staff.
It was a huge effort and everyone is rightfully proud of what we achieved out there.
Knowing the fans are supporting us was a feature of being out in China , the Girls United campaign really got the fans interested and their messages of support were a great boost for all the girls out in China "
2007 began with a tournament in China , the Four Nations Cup which saw England take on Germany , USA and China and come away with two creditable draws.
Smith played her part in all three games , and her performances against Germany and USA saw her named ' Player of the tournament '. A pleasing credit given the company she was in.
It was at the World Cup that Smith truly shone , and that is her most vivid memory of the year.
" It was one of the highlights of my career to play at the world Cup , " Smith admits.
" I had dreamed about it for so long and to do it was a thrill. "" It was absolutely amazing to play on the biggest stage and it's definitely the highlight of my career"
