As i didn't really watch this match (but for the last 15 minutes of either half in the first leg, which overlapped the Everton one), who deserved to win over the two legs?

What a sad end to a courageous performance.
In terms of performance I think we deserved to go through over the course of the two legs; a mistake from Gilberto on his debut gifted them a first leg lead and we were much more positive and attacking throughout the second leg. Still, we failed to take our chances and have only ourselves to blame. PSV had their moments and Koevermans really should have scored from that well-worked free-kick and put the tie beyond us - we were fortunate there. In fact PSV didn't do too much wrong, they just lacked ambition and were quite nervy in the second half in particular. Gomes had a shocker of a game and although he made a few fantastic saves, his flamboyance almost cost his team on several occasions, yet I still fancied him to do well if and when the game eventually went to penalties. From the rest of the PSV team, Culina, Afellay and Farfan looked like very decent players. Also, Edison Mendez has one hell of a shot on him. I have to pay tribute to Ramos and the way he attacked this tie - his substitutions were fantastic. There's simply no point in dropping out of a competition with a whimper and yet you see it happen all to often. All or nothing was seemingly Ramos' philosophy: we'll scored a damn goal or concede one trying! This is just what all Spurs fans want to see as it corresponds exactly to the motto of our club. Berbs also deserves to be singled out as his finish was sublime. He also worked very hard throughout the game and overall put in a performance which was in stark-contrast to some of the displays we saw from him earlier in the season. The rest of the team also did well and made few mistakes; King and Woody again showed how good they can be for us and Robbo made some important saves and held the ball well when necessary. Those three players were virtually flawless and allowed us to chase the game in the way that we needed to. It was always going to be tough when it went to penalties and I was really unsure how we'd manage. At the time I was wishing that Keane was still on the pitch, but our first four takers kept their heads and did well. When Jenas - who had received the armband once King and Keane had left the field - stepped up to take what would've been the winning penalty, I was quietly confident. When that didn't work out my heart sank because I knew that sooner or later both Zokora and Chimbonda would have to step up; Zoks had never previously scored for Spurs but took a fantastic penalty into the top corner. Chimbonda is simply not a penalty taker and was almost destined to miss. He duly obliged as he scuffed the ball and it rolled a couple of feet wide of the goalie's right post, with Gomes going the wrong way. Oh well, at least we have a place booked in next year's competition and I'm thoroughly looking forward to it. |

Tottenham defintiely deserved it over the two legs. PSV never really got playing in either of them. In the first Tottenham were not good, but PSV weren't either. Tottenham deserved to win it more than them, but somehow ended up losing because of a Gilberto error which led to Farfan's very well taken goal. In the second leg Tottenham were much better,, and very nearly won it on a number of occasions. So unlucky. I feel gutted for them. |

That is the silver lining G Man, our Carling Cup win was vital, we can look forward to another UEFA Cup campaign next season.
Think we picked a great season to go off the boil in the league with only one UEFA Cup place going there this season and Everton et al really stepping up for it (or better) Gutted we couldnt advance past PSV, I had a good chunk of change on us winning this competition, the money was profits so doesnt matter but I think we could have gone all the way if we had got past this hurdle. Same as last season against Seville, they were the toughest team left and we draw them early Think this sums it up quite well from the players point of view.
But on the other side the pressure of the whole season is now off and Ramos can change things round, do whatever he likes and have a look at players in different combinations, positions etc to decide who he wants to keep for next season and who is getting the boot. (a lot of the latter hopefully) |

saw from extra time onwards and have to say i`m not gutted Tottenham are out ...of course...
as they say that is the luck of the penalty shootout ..Jenas had the chance to put Tottenham through but his shot was superbly saved .. in the end the best team does not always go through in these situations ... |

Excellent post mate About the penalty shootout: I can't blame Chimmy too much as he's a defender. I was expecting him to miss...in fact I was expecting Zokora to miss too! I'd lay a lot of the blame on Jenas - he had the key to the quarter finals. I know it's harsh, but just think about the situation: Gomes is under pressure to make a save, as it was last chance saloon for PSV. Hence Gomes HAS to dive one way or the other - he isn't going to stand on his line and risk looking like a complete lemon if Jenas sticks it in the corner. I was screaming at the telly as he stepped up to take it to smash it right down the middle, average height (in case his legs kick it away). Instead Jenas opted to place it, and his body language gave it away - it was obvious that he was going to stick it to Gomes' left. I remember in the FA Cup when Jenas was through on goal twice against Man Utd. Again, both times he tried to place it. PUT YOUR FCUKIN FOOT THROUGH IT, SON!!!!!!!! It really annoys me about him. About the game, I agree with Mont totally. Ramos dared to do and he nearly did it. Brave tactics and in the end we go out by a lottery. God, I hate penalties. It's not football. It's still been a good season for us, and although we're out I'm still happy. We're moving in the right direction. I just hope Berbatov thinks the same. We must target a top four finish next season, but first things first, let's try to win as many games as possible to the end of this season and see where we finish. |

but the one saved by Robinson was by his legs wasnt it ....just pure luck really .. Jenas could have smashed the ball down the middle and Gomez may have had the same luck .. As you say its a lottery really .....Jenas scores and he is a hero ...miss and its `he should have done this` and `he telegraphed his kick` ... i do blame Chimbonda more as he only had to get the ball on target and Tottenham would have been through ....even a defender should have the basic shooting skills ...but again everyone can miss occasionally ..
hard luck Tottenham .. |

Found it har flicking between these & Evertons peno's but what the feck was Chimbonda trying to do? Did he just completly scuff it? On another note though, was he playing ahead of Hutton??

Hutton was cup-tied for this match, otherwise he probably would've played at RB and Chimbo would've played at LB. |

No, Chimbonda was taking the penalty to keep Tottenham in it. Jenas took a penalty to win it for Tottenham. Chimbonda had more pressure. For me Jenas has to take more blame. He volunteered to take the penalty. Chimbonda didn't want to take one, but when it went to sudden death players had them forced upon them. |

I don't think Jenas had a lot of choice really. As our captain and goal-scoring midfielder, he simply had to take one of the first five. I do agree though that Jenas is more at fault than Chimbo. Jenas was expected to score the tie-winning penalty and he knows that, whereas as Chimbo was almost expected to miss. Many legendary players have missed penalties in the past though so neither of them are in bad company. |

Neither can really be blamed too heavily. Arguably Robbo deserves more blame than them, for making it so easy for the PSV penalty takers.

Exactly. I still think Jenas should shoulder most of the blame for us cocking up the penalty shootout but it's a lottery really. As Conner says, had he scored then in the shootout then he's a hero. It was clear Gomes was better at spot kicks though - Gomes nearly saved both O Hara's and Bent's penalties. On a positive note, that's two wins on the bounce now after the 4-1 battering at Birmingham and the 0-1 reverse at WHL. Hopefully we can go on a run through to the end of the season. |
