Paul Gascoigne has ambitions of taking Kettering Town into the Football League after taking over as manager of the club today.

Gazza takes over at Rockingham Road after a consortium he has been involved with took charge of the club.

The Poppies have never sampled life in the league in their 133-year history - but the Geordie reckons he can change that.

"I think it's good and exciting," said Gascoigne, who has been a regular visitor to St. James' Park over the last couple of seasons.

"Kettering haven't been in the Football League for 133 years and one of our main objectives is to get them there.

"I'm not going to say we'll do it this season or next season - there's a lot we can improve on with either the players we have now or the players we bring in.

"We're looking forward to doing our best to take Kettering forward."

Gascoigne has been desperate to get back into football over the last few years, but spells in China, Boston United and a Portuguese side on the Algarve have all failed to work out for him.

But he has reassured Kettering fans that he is fully committed to his new club.

He went on: ""No-one really knows what happened at these clubs. I was being used for publicity.

"This is a different situation. I've put some of my own money into the club and I will reassure fans and players that I will not be walking away."

While Gazza will manage the club, former Northern Ireland and Chelsea striker Kevin Wilson will be Director of Football with former Arsenal midfielder Paul Davis becoming Head Coach.

how does everyone think Gazza will get on ?

Fingers crossed, Gazza will do great. I am not sure whether he has the correct frame of mind for management. He has had so much to deal with and so many battles throughout his life, Im a little concerned for him as a manager.

Maybe it is exactly what he needs, to be back involved in football etc. I just hope the pressures of management dont get too much for him. Being a manager in the lower leagues is the right step for him though. He can gain so much experience down there.

I love Gazza, and want to see him week in, week out happy and smiling - involved in footy. The guy now deserves this break.

Good luck Paul!

Its a hard job - Kettering used to be a force in the Conference but on hard times they have struggled - Gazza will certainly attract the crowds in the early days - I await with interest!

I also think he can attract players to Kettering Town

Some old retired pros, or players in the end of their career

Well Gazza has quit after just 5 games Sad

Such a pity. He get so enthusiastic about something, then gives up.

Always a story with Gazza isn't there. Apparently he was sacked and now he's threatening to try and buy the club so he can keep going.

What happened then? I haven't kept up with his little soap opera of a life for a while now. I knew he was there but didn't know he'd quit.
