How about winning the La Liga title with Real Madrid this year and scoring an incredible 46 goals in 38 league matches?

I know Messi also scored a lot of goals but he only won the Spanish cup with Barcelona and didn't do much with Argentina.

If Ronaldo doesn't win this years Ballon D'or it will be a big surprise although the award is voted for by the other players and coaches.

the fact someone won a league title shouldnt give him any substantial bonus in such matters as this one. for winning la liga he has the respective title and the golden medal bestowed upon him. what else is he expecting?

the amount of goals is a bit closer and relevant criterion, but still cant serve as the driving factor. it's not the amount that matters, it's rather the way those goals were being taken what really counts. in other words, it's only technique that really counts.

techique includes not only goals but the art of passing, movement, dribbling, the ability to take and hold the ball when neccessary and so forth. i dont see any other player who would be endowed with all these qualities to the messi's extent, really.

like it or not, but he must recieve this ballon for another time in a row, as thre is no-one near to him.

Messi has broken a whole host of records for goalscoring this season and was way more important to Barca given the loss of Villa, Pedro and Sanchez intermittently last season. Throw in the woeful form of Fabregas, the loss of our first choice defence and its almost fair to say Messi single handedly kept Barca in contention for the two main trophies.
He became the clubs top scorer, equalled a long standing European cup record, became all time top goal scorer in the KO stage of UCL, broke Mullers 39 yr old record, first player to net 100 at the Camp Nou and is currently 12 behind Muller for goals in a calendar year with 14 games remaining. Its fair to say he has had quite the season and more than a little deserving of the award.
Ronaldo scored less than him in a more successful team, with around 100 more shots, its not a great achievement, especially when you get the impression Ronaldo wants to beat Messi above all else.
For the record id love to see Xavi or Iniesta win it but I know its pie in the sky.

As for the rest of the list, how is Balotelli and Rooney on it? Also if Drogba makes it how does Cech not?

Balotelli played very well for Italy during Euro 2012.

I have no idea why Rooney made the shortlist as Man Utd didn't win anything and he was rubbish for England!

I guess Drogba is included as he did more that most in that team to help Chelsea win the Champions League.

He played well for like 3 games though, compared to Silva who was a better player at club level and part of the winning Spain team.
Drogba was excellent no doubt but if Cech doesnt save Robbens pen then he becomes the villain of the piece. Not saying he should be ahead of Drogba by any means but surely if they involve players for playing well 5 times out of 50 in a season then Cech is in with a shout?
I guess theyll never get it right and given its out of 2 players (at a stretch 4) then I suppose its irrelevant.

It will be a huge surprise if Messi & Del Bosque don't take these awards.

Even though Messi didn't win much this year I can't see him not given winning his scoring record. I imagine Del Bosque will win for coach award, would be hilarious if Di Matteo won. Imagine how awkward it would be for any Chelsea representatives at the ceremony! :D

The short list has been announced for this years Balon D'or.

Players

Lionel Messi
Christiano Ronaldo
Andres Iniesta

Coaches

Pep Guardiola
Vicente Del Bosque
Jose Mourinho

I would love to see Iniesta who is my favourite Spanish player win FIFA's player of the year ward.

Any more comments now that the short list has been announced?

Women's shortlist also announced.

Marta, Morgan, and Wambach.

Not sure about the inclusion of Marta or Morgan, to be honest. Marta was not great during the Olympics and Brazil under-performed. Morgan is America's new favorite women's athlete, but last year was Wambach's year. This year is looking like Morgan will be on her way to being the best women's player on the planet. Last year, though, aside from Wambach, I think Lloyd and Rapinoe had better years than Morgan.

I would have thought with would be Wambach, Sinclair, and Miyami in the shortlist, with Sinclair winning as her value to the Canadian team is second-to-none and she pretty much carried what is a decent-at-best team to a bronze medal.

I think Iniesta may edge out Ronaldo for 2nd place but no point contesting who is going to win it.
