Croatia becomes 28th EU member

Postby Hams » Wed Jul 03, 2013 1:18 pm

Croatia became the 28th nation to join the EU the other day.

This is despite having massive youth unemployment,a bankrupt economy and falling living standards.

Why did the unelected officials in Brussels allow them to join our club?

Surely its only a matter of time until they also need a hand out just to make ends meet.

I've supported Croatia since I was a teenager, so I'm happy that they've finally joined.

This means I can go work there, and, I think, claim benefits.

Each of the existing member nations of the EU must ratify a candidate country's ascension into the EU.

Without this step Croatia would be unable to join.

Here's a link for the Act that went through your parliament.

Here is a link to David Cameron's signature on the treaty to allow Croatia into the EU.

Thanks for the info BMJ
Even if all the other EU nations had to agree to admit Croatia
the actual criteria they would have needed to pass to become a member must have been very limited.
Surely you'd agree with me there?

I agree with Hams.

What are the leaders of these countries, including Cameron, going to do? Say no?

There is no doubt that when countries are admitted to the EU, it is a directive of the top bodies at the EU Commission and for the leaders of the member nations to sign it is like when the queen signs off on the crap that our parliament puts forward. Just a symbolic and constitutional gesture.

For all intents and purposes it is signed, sealed and delivered before it gets to the leaders of the member states.
