Liverpool v Stoke

Postby Conner99 » Sun Aug 11, 2013 1:04 pm

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers will start the season without the worries of European football ...his side only finished 7th last season and so it will be the Premier League he will be concentrating all his efforts on , of course the one problem he does have is the future of star striker Luis Suarez ...is he staying ..is he going ...

Liverpool face Stoke at Anfield in their opening game of the new season ..Suarez is as we all know banned from the first six games of the season after his much publicised biting episode on Chelsea`s Branislav Ivanovic . Liverpoool need a better start than last season when the lost 3-0 to West Brom ..will Brendan Rodgers be smiling or frowning .

Stoke finished last season in 13th place which was perhaps lower than manager Tonly Pulis had expected , a mid table position yet again , he left the club by mutual consent in may and was soon replaced by Welshman Mark Hughes who signed a 3 year contract on 30 may 2013 .

Stoke have been in the Premier League for a number of years now and it will be a tough task facing Mark Hughes , he knows only too well the problem facing clubs fighting to stay in the Premier League ..having been sacked by QPR only six months ago Hughes said ..""If I am honest, we all tried to run there before we could walk,"At Stoke it's about steady progress.

Well a tough first match for Mark Hughes ...can he cause an upset .?

It's important Liverpool get off to a good start. I don't want a repeat season starting from last seasons West Brom result.

I think we'll win 2-0. Iago Aspas debut goal and Coutinho with a dribbling run to slot home from outside the D.

Mark Hughes and Stoke City - a match made in heaven (or hell) for sure.

can't imagine this will be too glamorous a game, lots of possession football from the home side against a stubborn backline of the away side.

Liverpool will need the nous of Coutinho or Sturridge to be able to unlock Stoke as this will be their best way of breaking them down. getting the first goal could well open the floodgates but the longer the game is goalless the more confidence Stoke will get and we could well see a 0-0.

Other than a couple of new defenders I don't think Mark Hughes has really signed any other players for Stoke this summer.

Liverpool should be able to get off to a good start even without Suarez who is banned for the first 6 matches of the season.

Liverpool 1-0 Stoke.

Not great that it's a 7:45am kick-off here. I'd be fine if it was against a high-octane team, but against Stoke... I'll need a cup of coffee to accompany me.

Nervy there at the end, but Mignolet channeling his inner Dudek with a huge penalty save!

Mignolet was showing his nerves for most of the game, which is funny as he said he never gets nervous but he dug deep to keep the 3 points. Brilliant save. On his debut too! 12 points for my fantasy team

Very impressed with Iago Aspas and Sturridge who linked up like they've been playing together for years.
Hopefully we see both of them involved in eachothers goals.

Stoke weren't too bad defensively with Begovic in goal but they left it too late to threaten our goal.

So pleased to get off to a win. Hopefully we can chain a few similar results and stay high up the table for aslong as possible.

Players that stuck out for me are Begovic, Mignolet, Sturridge, Iago Aspas and Lucas.

We dominated for most of the game but towards the end we got lucky with a double save from Mignolet...

If we keep missing chances like we did last season then we are constantly gonna keep dropping points and playing catch up once again,i'd like to put our last 20 minutes down to nerves of the opening day but this is exactly how we played last season,we hit the woodwork twice and the opposing keeper suddenly became superman at Anfield again..

A win is a win but we need to improve our finishing to avoid slip ups, today we got away with it but we won't always get away with it.

Now that's the kind of atmosphere that used to resonate at every
game within Anfield ,especially the roar that rose to a crescendo
with Migger'z penalty save....Honestly the noise in the last ten
minutes had the hairs on the back of my neck standing up like
they had overdosed on Viagra.

Begovic was simply phenomenal and only a crisp and clinical strike
from the returning Sturridge prevented him retaining a clean sheet.

Coutinho ,Aspas and Sturridge ,I don't believe I have seen a more
comfortable triumvirate at Liverpool with the ball at their feet.

Henderson was ordinary in the first half ,but in the second he was
extraordinary...... So he gets my man of the match.

So three points and a first day win, for what seems like an age
cant ask for more than that really....... And we picked up more
bookings than Stoke ,change is good

What a start....the first 20 mins or so of the first half was as exciting as it comes to watch Liverpool with possession and persistent attack.

Great result, impressed with Coutinho, Gerrard as always with the clinical passes and off course the keeper who looked shakey at first but turned out to be the man of the match for me due to that PK save.

I will say our defence is sketchy at best...we definitely need another centre half....I hope we swoop for Toby Alderwireld to partner the injury prone Agger with Kolo as backup.

If Jonathan Walters hadn't take such a poor penalty the outcome of this game could have
been very different plus Huth smashed a great chance against the cross bar and Shawcross also went close
so this game wasn't by all means just one way traffic by Liverpool and Stoke could have come away with a point.

In the same vein, Toure had a header clank of the crossbar himself. Henderson hit the post, not to mention a handful of chances from Sturridge and Aspas.

It was always going to be tricky, and it got nervy in the first 15 and last 10 minutes, but overall we were able to dictate the game.

26 shots to 10 shows where the ball was most of the time.
