I've worked out how Switzerland can be in the top 8, its because FIFA leader Sepp Blatter is Swiss and he fixed it for them.

or it's because Switzerland won their group by 7 clear points having remained unbeaten throughout.

no surprise given they have one of the finest managers in the world.

But look who Switzerland had in their group!

Team Pl W D L GF GA +/- Pts
1 Switzerland 10 7 3 0 17 6 11 24
2 Iceland 10 5 2 3 17 15 2 17
3 Slovenia 10 5 0 5 14 11 3 15
4 Norway 10 3 3 4 10 13 -3 12
5 Albania 10 3 2 5 9 11 -2 11
6 Cyprus 10 1 2 7 4 15 -11 5

This was the easiest in the whole of the European world cup qualifying campaign.

I don't think anyone should be ranked in the top 8 in the world based on this walk in the park. Does anyone agree with me?

Switzerland also beat Germany, Croatia and Brazil in friendlies.

It's pretty hard to argue against that.

Colombia have been brilliant in South American qualifying which counts for a lot because unlike European qualifying there's no really dodgy teams.

Imo qualifying beating teams like Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru etc.. is worth a lot more than beating Ukraine, Montenegro, Poland, Moldova and San Marino.

What have England done to deserve to be considered in the worlds top 8 teams? We finished in the Round of 8 in the Euros, the Round of 16 last World Cup and didn't even qualify for Euro 2008. That is not the record of a top 8 team. We haven't won a game against a top team in a major tournament since our 1-0 penalty win against Argentina in 2002. We haven't ever won a knockout game against a top side (Brazil Argentina, Holland, Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, Germany) in the knockout rounds of a major tournament except when we've hosted in 96 and 66.

People think that because the PL is the "Best League in the World" and because everyone has 'heard of' our players that's means we deserve a top 8 seed when our results (you know, the thing that actually matters) are nothing like deserving of it.

You make some good points fpl that England haven't beaten any of the top sides
in a major tournament since 2002 and that our recent record in competitions is very poor.

How about Italy though who won the world cup in 2006 and also got to the Euro 2012 final even though they lost to Spain?

I don't think we should be seeded just because we have the best league in the world at this moment in time.

Not sure it matters.
We are preparing for another summer of excuses really. If we get out of the group it will be a decent enough effort but we will have to play counter attack if we have a chance.
Also the conditions are going to be key, our players cannot handle heat and it will be ridiculous out there.
Our recent results against "mediocre" sides give us no reason to take anyone lightly next summer.

We have just one week to go now until the world cup draw is made in Brazil.

I'm not really looking forward to seeing Sepp Blatter on that stage but will have to put up with him.

I just hope that England avoid playing Spain as it will put me in a very difficult situation!

Who do you hope that your nation will play against or avoid when they decide the groups?

i can not wait to see Sepp step up and fumble around with his balls.

i'm not fussed who we get drawn with. to be the best you've got to beat the best.

I also think that the location of our matches as well as our opponents will be important.

The last thing that we need if our base is in Rio is to have to play one of our games in Manaus in the Amazon region.

Breaking news!

Sepp Blatter has just confirmed the pots for Friday's draw.

Pot 1
Brazil, Spain, Germany, Argentina, Colombia, Belgium, Uruguay, Switzerland

Pot 2
Ivory Coast, Ghana, Algeria, Nigeria, Cameroon, Chile, Ecuador

Pot 3
Japan, Iran, South Korea, Australia, United States, Mexico, Costa Rica, Honduras

Pot 4
Bosnia, Croatia, England, Greece, Italy, Holland, Portugal, Russia, France

There will be no more than 2 European nations in any group and all the South American countries will be kept apart.

We now hear that England could be moved from Pot 4 into Pot 2 which could give us a terrible draw.

As the lowest ranked nation It should have been France but because Michel Platini is UEFA president the rules have changed.

as somebody who is wholly against seedings i am glad a draw will be made for Pot 2.

it should be noted that the World Cup is a FIFA event and not UEFA, therefore Monsieur Platini has no say in it whatsoever.

OMG!

England have been drawn in a group with Uruguay,Costa Rica and Italy!

I think we should take away Sir Geoff Hurst's knighthood!

Also our first match will as i feared be in the Amazon region and against the Italians.

Any early comments on this draw?
