Uruguay has become the first country in the world to make it legal to grow, sell and consume marijuana.
The government hopes it will help tackle drug cartels, but critics say it will expose more people to drugs.
Have they done the right thing or could we see cannabis smokers in the South American nation end up like the walking dead?

I don't know how bad organized crime is in Urugay compared to Mexico or Colombia but it seems like a good idea to me. Mexico's war on drugs has failed miserably and the power of the cartels have turned the country into a failed state. The only way to take the wind out of their sails is legalization because that's going to cut their profits way more than the occasional raid or arrest of some kind of capo. It has worked for other countries and the risk of exposing people to a comparatively harmless drug like marijuana seems lower than the potential reward of weakening the cartels and reduce all kinds of drug related crime.
