Upson wins FA Youth Cup for Ipswich Town!!! |
|
Ipswich substitute Edward Upson hit a spectacular extra-time winner to hand his side a 3-2 aggregate win over Southampton in the FA Youth Cup final.
After a 2-2 draw in the first leg at St Mary's on Monday, the first 90 minutes at Portman Road ended goalless. Ipswich goalkeeper Shane Supple made a string of fine saves before Upson, at 15 the youngest player on the pitch, struck in the 118th minute. His first-time 25-yard strike flew into the net to give Town the silverware. Town's triumph was their first in this competition since 1975, and the first time a non-Premiership club had won since Millwall lifted the Cup in 1991. Town's academy director Bryan Klug was full of praise for his victorious Under-18 team. "It feels fantastic," Klug said. "It is a great achievement for the players and hopefully the start of something for a few careers. "It is very cruel on Southampton who are a very good team. Credit to them, they have had a fantastic season and it was a tough game. "But this win gives recognition to a lot of people at Ipswich who have worked very hard." |
