It is a Roman Salute, not a Nazi gesture, in which case he might be considerd a fascist, not a rascist though really I do not see what all the fuss is about. Everyone tries to be too politically correct these days, soon there will be a Law against standing on bugs.

If thats the comparison you see here, standing on bugs (which is not our topic here), as opposed to Di Canio's salute (which happens to be the topic), then I think you are missing the boat here. Politcal correctiveness is not the issue either....

we absolutely worshipped Paolo at Upton Park.

I saw him do things that made people gasp in awe.

reading and seeing all his antics at Lazio has made me very sad indeed.

truly unforgivable.

Oranje:

Sorry, don't think I am "defending" this action, but just to point out in regards to your political statement, most of the football troubles ARE down to either Religion, or Political correctness. Look at this entire thread? Everyone assumed it to be a "Nazi" statement, which is a political gesture, is that not what all the fuss is about?

Here is a quote from Di Canio on the incident:

"I made the Roman salute because it's a salute from a comrade to his comrades and was meant for my people.

"With this stiff arm I do no want to incite violence or racial hatred."

My squashing bug remark was merely tongue in cheek on the fact that everyone over reacts to everything, due to PC awareness.

You should have been at the Rangers Game when Gazza pretended to play the flute infront of the Celtic fans, now THAT certainly incited racial hatred, heh.

He didn't realise it was such a big issue when doing that. He certainly found out afterwards though. Always the joker, and that always landed him in hot water. Still love the guy though.

Actually O Dogg, he did realise exactly what it meant when he did it infront of the Celtic fans, that was the second time he did it. The first time was against some random European team which is why there was no fuss, and after that the other players told him what it meant etc.

What I meant Jono was that he didnt realise it was THAT offensive to do it. I am sure if he knew people would react the way they did, he wouldnt of done it.

as I understood it, it was a wind-up from Ally McCoist and a couple of others.

Gascoigne asked what would wind up the Celtic fans if he scored and they told him to mime the playing of a flute.

McCoist said that there was no way Gazza would have known the full sectarian implications of doing it, although obviously he was trying to rile them, and was stupid enough not to find out the exact connotations fo what he was doing.
