Rangers captain Barry Ferguson has welcomed Celtic's signing of Roy Keane and is looking forward to facing him in Old Firm action.
"Celtic have made a massive signing," said Ferguson. "Keane is a guy I have always looked up to, he is one of my favourite players. He is a great midfielder and I love watching him. "He has got everything. He can tackle, he can pass and I like the fact that he moans a lot. Some people criticise him for that, but that's what I like about him. You can tell he gets his team-mates going." Ferguson's only previous competitive appearance against Keane came during his spell at Blackburn Rovers and he finished on the losing side in a 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford in November 2003. "I think I did okay," smiled Ferguson. "It will be great to play against him again." Keane's new team-mate Shaun Maloney, meanwhile, said yesterday that the players at Celtic Park, like Ferguson, already look up to the new signing. "It's a big signing for the club," said the striker. "He's a top player and all the players, especially the young players, look up to him. We will be looking for his influence for the rest of the season. "There are people, who have done a lot more in the game than I have, with such a high opinion of him so that speaks for itself. He's a fine player and throughout his career he has won things and that makes him a top player and someone who we all look up to. "I don't think too many of the players will be in awe of him. He's talked about trying to take us to the next level and hopefully he can do that. It just adds to the confidence we have to have a player like that in the squad." |
