He's already there.

Maradona, Pele, Zico, Dalglish, Best, Di Stefano, Puskas, Cruijff, Ronaldo.... I could go on, all but pretenders to the true king of kings.

All hail Ronaldo the football messiah, the king of that never seen before stepover.

His innovation, his teamwork, his leadership. Who else has ever come close?

You are seeing the greatest player of all time. Ask Roma!

He can't be the greatest of all time till he carries Portugal to a victory in the World Cup finals. Till then, he can only be great and among the best.

If Ronaldo was to perform the way he has this season for the rest of his career, I think he would definitlyey deserve a mention. It's too early to declare him alongisde Maradonna, Pele, Me, Eusebio, etc. The majority of the games greatest of all time, were a part of great teams.

I think if he stays at United, they could become one of the greatest club sides of all time (obviously if the likes of Rooney, Rio, Anderson, etc all stick around too) and Ronaldo, being the one that stands out the most, would be recognised as a true great. what I think will happen though, he will leave United for Madrid or someone else, have an unhappy few years, then go elsewhere while his career slowly detiorates. We have seen it with the likes of Anelka. One of the most promising strikers around but constant moaning and club switching caused him to fade away until Bolton resurrected his career. I have a feeling that Ronaldo's arrogance and self-indulgence could be his downfall.

not far! I think he needs to win the Champions League with united and take this seasons form to get his national side into the finals of the european championships again.
I do think he is already as good,(in the modern game), as maradonna, best, pele etc were at 22/23 years of age and if he can play consistently at this level for a few more years then we may be talking about the best player ever! If he can maintain his form until the 2010 world cup and produce on the biggest stage there is then we will be able to say he is the greatest ever.
His year on year improvement has been tremendous, cant wait to see him at his peak in a few years

Rolling Eyes I'm sick of Ronaldo, Ronaldo, Ronaldo, every which way you turn... It's getting beyond a joke now... Yes, he's a world class player and yes he's one of the best in the world right now but to even mention him in the same sentence as the true greats football has seen over the years is an absolute joke.

He's a 23 year old who has had two good seasons at the top level of club football, get some perspective on the situation..... He still has a lot of learning to do before I even consider him fit to lace the boots of United's legends nevermind the worldwide greats like Maradona, Pele etc. He has to work on a lot of his game, his mentality and he has to mature with his head in the game, NOT signing advertising contracts, doing modelling, getting wrapped up in showbiz and all this crap.

If he's still perfoming and improving in the manner he is now in 4-5 years then we can begin to consider what kind of status he holds in footballing history. Before then it is pointless.

37 goals and the season isnt even over! Not bad for a winger, eh? this is my first thread on any football forum so please don't jump on the bandwagon to hurl abuse at me or kick off about how ludicrous a statement tis is. i fully intend to provoke some kind of a reaction because i believe this is what every sane football fan should be aksing themselves when watchin his performances. please do not get offended. i wish to debate this in an 'informed way' with other football fans.

we are waiting patiently then for you to return .... Wink

Well said, agreed with all of it. No offence to the guy who started the topic but its just beyond a joke at this stage, how can two good seasons possibly make somebody the best ever? Ive gone through it so many times im not even going to bother..

B*llocks. That will have no bearing on how good a footballer he is.

If you go by that rule, then Cruyff was average, Di Stefano was average, Eusebio was average, and George Best was sh*t.

This a a joke though. You can't ever consider a 23 year old a true legend. He's nowhere near that status yet.

He needs to maintain this over at least four or five years and win either a Euro Championship, Champions League or World Cup, preferrably the latter or all three.

Fair enough.

I suppose you have the right to ask the question as he has smashed Best's record.

LOL. I think I could name about 50 better players who have been active sometime during the past 15 years. So i'd say he's pretty far of the mark.

The current standard of footballers must be pretty awful if that's the case tdv, when remembering he's the supposed best player in the world.
