Canero signs Metrostars contract |
|
Dundee United midfielder Peter Canero has signed a four-year contract with New York/New Jersey Metrostars.
The 24-year-old will join the club coached by former Celtic and Rangers striker Mo Johnston on 1 January. Canero had played 12 times for United on a short-term deal after being allowed to leave Leicester City. Agent Raymond Sparkes told BBC Sport: "Although there were noises about a new contract, that did not happen and Mo Johnston was very keen on him." United manager Gordon Chisholm had hoped to be able to retain Canero, presently sidelined through injury. But he admitted: "The budget at the moment won't let me offer him a new contract. "I've met with Peter and with the chairman and the situation is clear - if I want to get new faces in, I have to get players out. "I have a list of players I'd like to being in, but at the moment I don't know if I'll be able to use it." Celtic have been linked with a January transfer bid for right-back Mark Wilson. United will listen to offers for out-of-favour Derek McInnes, but the former Rangers and West Brom midfielder's high wages could be a barrier to any move. |
