Chris Sutton admits he is surprised at Birmingham City's position in the Premiership table.
The England cap has joined Blues for the second half of the season after leaving Celtic on a free transfer.
He concedes he was not expecting to play for another club in his career, but is now determined to keep Birmingham in the top flight.
Sutton is due to make his debut for his new club on Saturday, when Steve Bruce's strugglers travel to out-of-sorts Charlton.
The 32-year-old will form a strike partnership with Emile Heskey, with Bruce hoping the duo can score the goals to lift Blues to safety.
Having trained with his new team-mates, Sutton is confident there is sufficient quality to stay up and he was taken aback by the club's troubles.
"I thought I was going to finish my career at Celtic and the way it ended for me up there wasn't ideal," said Sutton.
"But my only concern now is doing my best for Birmingham and helping them climb the table.
"The position we're in isn't ideal and comparing the squad we've got to some of the others, it is a surprise
"But it's always been a fine line between winning and losing at this level and I'm sure with the players we've got, we can get out of a difficult situation.
"I'll certainly be busting a gut to play my part."
