Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson could find himself in hot water with the Football Association after widespread reports claiming he verbally attacked referee Steve Bennett.

The Red Devils suffered a humbling 3-1 defeat to bitter rivals Manchester City on Saturday, and Ferguson reportedly harangued Bennett at half time as his side went in 2-0 down after strikes from Trevor Sinclair and Darius Vassell.

City's first goal aroused suspicions of offside, and Ferguson was also angered by a yellow card given to young star Rooney_79586.shtml'>Wayne Rooney.

Ferguson has already called for Bennett to review a red card handed to Cristiano Ronaldo for a wild tackle, but it is his half-time conduct that has been the subject of intense focus after the match at Eastlands.

In an angry tirade, Ferguson is widely reported to have told Bennett 'You will need a police escort to get out of here' as well as shouting a number of obscenities.

If Bennett includes the incident in his match report, then Ferguson can expect to hear from the FA regarding disciplinary action after another disappointing performance from his underperforming stars.

United striker Rooney could also incur the wrath of the administrators at Soho Square after reportedly causing damage to his team's dressing room door as well as verbally confronting Bennett himself.

It is yet another incident that calls the England star's composure into question, but United were not keen to elaborate on reports of the fiery half-time encounter.

"There was an incident at half-time relating solely to the manager's assessment of the referee's first-half performance," read a club statement.

A gang of United players also surrounded Bennett after the decision to send Ronaldo off, an event that in itself may yet result in disrepute charges.

I cant complain about Ronaldo, he deserved to get sent off but I can understand why Fergie is annoyed with the ref, he gave everything Citys way in the first half. The goal was clearly about a yard offside

I'm not sure he deserved a straight red, again its inconsistency with the referees. Since he made no contact with the ball or the player, he can only be booked for "intent", which is it would have been dangerous if he made contact, Lampard faced a similar booking for a challenge on Robin Van Persie in the community shield but he got away with a yellow. Just depends on the referee I guess.
