West Brom legend Cyrille Regis admits the short-term future looks "very dark indeed" for the relegation-threatened club.

However Regis is confident the club where he spent seven years of his career are capable of bouncing back at the first attempt, should their relegation be confirmed in the next fortnight.

Defeat by Arsenal at The Hawthorns has deepened the Albion anxiety, with Saturday's visit to Manchester United potentially a game which could send the Baggies down to the Coca-Cola Championship.

Should they lose at boss Bryan Robson's old club, Albion would be relegated if there is a winner from the match between fellow strugglers Crystal Palace and Southampton.

Regis said: "If we do go down, we'll be well stocked and in good condition for next year.

"The trap-door is closing. They're not going to get any favours at Manchester United.

"It's a tough ask, they are looking for Crystal Palace and Southampton to draw to give any hope to the situation, but it's looking very dark indeed."

Former striker Regis feels Robson, who took charge in November, might have stood a better chance of saving Albion had he been in the job a little longer.

"I think he's taken the reins a little too late to get his ideas across," Regis told Sky Sports News, before recommending that Robson should stay on for next season.

"I think so," he added.

"They are playing good football at times and they have got some good quality players. I'm sure they will make a serious challenge next year."
