The Offside Rule – And The Video Ref Is Coming |
|
In the recent Middlesborough game, Rooney_79586.shtml'>Wayne Rooney was given offside when clean through one on one with the goalkeeper. A second goal to Man U at that stage would have put the game beyond Middlesborough. TV replays clearly show the linesman got the decision wrong.
I’m strongly in favour of changing the offside rule and taking the decision out of the hands of linesmen and refs, who are only human and are bound to make mistakes in a very fast moving game. The video ref technology is already available and I believe there may be plans for its trial introduction into football in the not too distant future. I would like to see the offside rule only come in to play IF a goal is scored from open play and the decision entirely judged by the video ref. This would make play more open and flowing, and removes the human error factor for key decisions that affect the outcome of games. |

FIFA oppose the use of such technology UNTIL a suitable technology is available. A suitable technology is NOW available. Taken From The FIFA WEBsite: At its Annual General Meeting today (8/3/08 ) in Gleneagles, Scotland, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) has decided to put on ice goal-line technology and to stop tests in this area until further notice. Amongst others, the questions of the human aspect of the game, the universality of the Laws of the Game, as well as the simplicity and efficiency of the technology were taken into consideration. However, the IFAB has approved a proposal from FIFA to conduct an experiment involving two additional assistant referees who will mainly focus on fouls and misconduct in the penalty area. The competition in which this test will be conducted will be decided at a later stage. The Board also discussed a proposal from the Scottish FA regarding the use of video evidence to sanction simulation after the game. Although the suggestion was not approved, the IFAB members agreed that simulation is an act of cheating which must be intensively fought and sanctioned during the game and that all member associations would be encouraged to do so. |

We've already discussed about this issue a long time ago.
It would not be a good idea because then you will have people asking camera review for goals, fouls, etc., and next thing you know this will turn into an American Football game that takes 4-5 hours. Yeah the ref's and assistant ref's make mistakes but that's the way it is. And even if it were my team that this happened to I would get mad but in the end that's how it is in life. Technology can't solve all our problems. |
