Millwall player-manager Dennis Wise has escaped punishment after successfully arguing his case against a FA charge of improper conduct.
The 38-year-old threw a water bottle on the floor which appeared to hit the fourth official towards the end of the Lions' clash against Cardiff on February 22. FA officials decided there was no intent in the actions, which saw Wise sent to the stands. A statement from the FA read: "At a disciplinary commission hearing today a charge of improper conduct against Millwall player-manager Dennis Wise was found to be not proven." Millwall won 1-0 against the Bluebirds, but the bad-tempered match finished with an ugly melee as referee Mike Jones handed out three red cards after a last-minute brawl. Professional Footballers' Association deputy chief executive Mick McGuire, who represented Wise during the case, was pleased with the outcome of Wise's hearing. McGuire said: "We were delighted with the result, the committee fully accepted Dennis' version that there was no intent, it was simply an accident and did not deserve an improper conduct charge on this basis. "They fully accepted out testimony and therefore upheld the appeal. We are happy that the FA took on board witness statements including officials from Cardiff. "The commission took a common sense view, it's an emotive situation for managers and coaches, and they have to vent their frustrations. But Dennis did not reach a level of impropriety, it was a simple accident. "The water bottle was thrown on the ground but the action was not deemed reckless." Wise has impressed at the New Den in his first managerial role, guiding the club to the FA Cup final last season which gained them entry to the UEFA Cup. The south London club have missed out on the play-offs this season, but Wise has earned a reputation as a bright young manager. With Lions chairman Theo Paphitis leaving the club at the end of the season, Wise is set to hold talks with Millwall officials this summer. |
