Text Message? Mr.Sheperd?

Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd says he did not send Sven-Goran Eriksson a text message about him replacing manager Graeme Souness in the summer.

Eriksson will stand down as England boss after the World Cup and the News of the World claimed his agent Athole Still had been contacted by Shepherd.

Shepherd told the club's website: "I must have amnesia as I can't remember sending a text message to Mr Eriksson.

"I don't even have his number so I'd love to see this message."

Eriksson is free to talk to available parties as part of his departure deal agreed with Football Association chief executive Brian Barwick.

But Shepherd added: "All I can say is that I'd like to wish Mr Eriksson well with England in the summer and good luck for whatever he chooses to do after that."

Newcastle's current boss Souness has been criticised over his side's poor form this season.

However, the pressure was somewhat eased after the Magpies managed to overcome tricky FA Cup opponents Cheltenham with a 2-0 win at Whaddon Road on Saturday.
