McFadden wants Scottish pride |

James McFadden is determined to stop Scotland being seen as the laughing stock of world football.
The 22-year-old Everton winger is angry at people having a joke at the national team's expense. But he believes there is a brighter future ahead now Walter Smith has replaced Berti Vogts at the helm. "People laugh at Scotland at some of the results we've had," said McFadden at the launch of the official Breast Cancer Charity campaign by Scotland team sponsors Morrisons. "Hopefully that will change. Walter has come in and he knows what it is all about - he is Scottish. "He is a proud man and doesn't want bad results. The player don't want bad results either. "We need to change. We need to work harder and make sure we don't lose games first and foremost." McFadden attended the squad get-together in Manchester in February but was then forced to miss the defeat by Italy in a World Cup qualifier because of a hamstring injury. The former Motherwell star said: "I am really looking forward to working under Walter. "I have spoken to some of the players and everything they said about him was good. "When I met him in Manchester I was very impressed and I can't wait to get back in the team. Scotland plummeted from a top-20 ranking to their current position of 86th under Vogts. However the double-header with Moldova and Belarus does offer the opportunity to gain maximum points. That would put Scotland back in contention to finish runners-up to Italy in their World Cup qualifying group. McFadden is quietly confident they can push on. "Obviously Italy are the top team in the group but every other country is beatable," he said. "If am being realistic then we have to win every one of our remaining games," It's a tough ask, but a rejuvenated Scotland look to be relishing the challenge. |
