Grimsby Town turned down a £300,000 bid from Bristol City for striker Michael Reddy on transfer deadline day, it emerged on Wednesday.

City also saw their last-minute efforts to land Bournemouth striker James Hayter rebuffed despite offering an initial down-payment of £150,000.

Reddy has been instrumental in firing The Mariners into contention for automatic promotion this season and news of the club's determination to hang onto him will come as an enormous boost to morale on the North East Lincolnshire Coast.

Town have recently developed a reputation for being a selling club - particularly after offloading former Blundell Park hero Michael Boulding to Barnsley in February 2004, but chairman John Fenty is keen to keep the current squad intact.

Meanwhile, Hayter will spend the rest of the season playing for his future after a proposed move away from Dean Court failed to materialise.

A variety of clubs had been interested in the prolific marksman - amongst them Celtic and Rangers - although City were the only club to attempt an eleventh-hour bid aimed at luring him away from Dorset.

Hayter will now be keen to impress watching clubs throughout the rest of the season as his contract is set to expire during the summer.
