Golden girl Dagny calls it a day
3 Feb 2006 Norway winger Dagny Mellgren, who starred in Euro 2005 during the summer, has announced her retirement at the age of 27. Mellgren shot to fame in her native country when she scored the golden goal extra time winner for Norway against the United States to win the Gold Medal at the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000. Her shirt from the games was on exhibition in the National Football Museum during the summer. After a spell in the USA with Boston Breakers and a time out of the game with injury, Mellgren returned to her best during the UEFA Championships and gave a dazzling display in the semi final win over Sweden before scoring in the Final against Germany. |
