Championship crunch time

The Championship is set for a thrilling final weekend of the season on Sunday with 10 teams playing for their future.

Sunderland have already been promoted as champions, but a further seven teams have a chance of either automatic promotion or a play-off place.

At the bottom there is a three-way fight to avoid the drop to League One.

BBC Sport outlines the possible permutations and Coventry manager Micky Adams gives his verdict on the state of play at each end of the table.

AUTOMATIC PROMOTION

Sunderland are already up as champions and will be joined by either Wigan or Ipswich, who are level on points.

Wigan go into the weekend in pole position due to their far superior goal difference.

They have the best defence in the division but have taken just two points from their last two games and host Reading, who are still in the hunt for a play-off place.

Ipswich boast the most potent attack, but like their rivals have hit a poor run of form with just one win in their last four outings. They travel to relegation-haunted Brighton and will have to better Wigan's result.

Micky Adams' verdict
They are both very, very good teams and deserve to go up but Wigan have to be the favourites, they are in the driving seat.

Wigan's attacking force is well documented with Jason Roberts and Nathan Ellington and they will want to end the season with yet more goals. It could be telling that they are at home.

But if they do slip up Ipswich are more than capable of taking full advantage as they also score a lot of goals.

They seem to score them from everywhere and Joe Royle and his team know that is exactly what they need - goals, a win and then they will just have to wait and see what happens.

PLAY-OFFS

The consolation prize for missing out on automatic promotion will be top spot in the play-offs for either Wigan or Ipswich, with Preston also already assured of a play-off place.

Derby, West Ham and Reading are vying for the two other places, while Sheffield United require a mathematical miracle to make the top six.

Derby need a point at home to Preston to cement their place, while West Ham, who travel to Watford, must secure a better result than Reading.

The two teams go into the weekend level on points and goal difference. If they both win, and Derby lose, the Rams will miss out.

Micky Adams' verdict
It's a case of whoever holds their nerve.

Preston are safe, they're the form team at the minute and would be my tip to go up from the play-offs, although, while it's a cliche it's also true, the play-offs are a lottery.

Often you find it's the team that gets in through the back door on the last day who have the momentum and this season that could be West Ham.

But don't count Reading out of it just yet. Wigan need to win to get into the Premier League but, while that's a massive incentive, Reading's recent win at Sunderland shows they can win anywhere and cannot be ruled out.

RELEGATION

Rotherham and Nottingham Forest are already down and will be joined by one of three teams - Crewe, Gillingham or Brighton.

Brighton beat Rotherham on the penultimate weekend to climb out of the relegation zone and need just a point at Ipswich to secure their safety.

Gillingham need to win at Nottingham Forest to be sure of staying in the Championship as well, but any permutations become academic unless Crewe win at home to Coventry.

If Dario Gradi's men fail to take maximum points they will be going down.

Micky Adams' verdict
There will be twists and turns throughout the Championship on the final day and the bottom will not be any different.

At the minute it's Crewe who are in that third spot and they will be desperate for the points against us.

We expect a difficult game and they'll be highly motivated, but I can promise the fans of Gillingham and Brighton that we'll be going all out to try and beat them.

It's difficult to say how it will pan out as all three teams are more than capable of getting the points they need.

Ok, I beleive that Ipswich will get it and Reading will jsut about make the Play-Offs by beating Wigan on the final day as they have even more to fight for as Wigan are guaranteed a play-off place. I hope Brighton go down so then Leon Knight might come to Ninian Park. But then again I wouldnt mind Gillingham going down as they are Sh**e. In the play offs I want it to be Reading, Wigan, Preston (guarenteed) and Derby I think Reading would win it !
