Former Republic of Ireland international Jeff Kenna has been confirmed the as the new manager of Galway United.

Dubliner Kenna, 37, takes over from Tony Cousins, who was sacked three weeks ago after his side registered just one point from their first four games.

Things haven't improved since his departure, with caretaker manager Billy Clery overseeing three defeats since, most recently a 3-0 defeat to Sligo Rovers on Saturday night.

Kenna, who was capped 27 times by Ireland, has been released from his playing contract by Kidderminster Harriers in order to take up the role.

Seems like a big risk considering their position in the league. Thought they would go with someone with experience but obviously theyre willing to take a risk on him.

Nah dont think so, he was asked at the press conference but said probably not. Could prove to be a good decision but after the whle Staunton thing I wouldnt be overly confident for them
