Swans : escape lottery

Swansea boss Kenny Jackett was elated after they clinched automatic promotion to League One on the final day of the season with a nervy 1-0 win at Bury.
Southend could have sent the Swans into the lottery of the play-offs but could only draw 1-1 away at Grimsby.

"At the start of the season I would have taken the play-offs and we've been fourth for a few weeks," Jackett said.

"But sometimes in football it's your day and we made it our day at the business end of the season."

Adrian Forbes struck after just 25 seconds to give Swansea the perfect start, but from then on it was backs-to-the-wall stuff.

"The two sides above us drew, so any win at this stage of the season is a massive, massive result," Jackett added.

"We were terrific, our defending was fantastic, Bury's clear-cut chances were few and far between despite having a lot of pressure."

Bury opened up two sides of their Gigg Lane ground to the visitors on Saturday and the Jacks took full advantage with nearly 5000 fans roaring Swansea on.

"I want to praise the supporters because they made it a home game and their singing all the way through the game was fantastic," a jubilant Jackett said.

"Eventful days in Manchester! We don't do anything straightforward or easy - that's why you all come.

"It's never boring - talk about drama, it's worth your season ticket here!"

Swansea can now look forward to life in their new 20,000-seater stadium at Morfa next season, able to add football in a higher division to make it a perfect new beginning.

The only down side to the afternoon was the slightly surreal sight of Swansea goalkeeper Willy Gueret being arrested and led away in handcuffs by police during the post-match celebrations.

The rest of the Swansea players delayed their evening entertainment as they waited outside a Bury police station for the Frenchman.

Gueret eventually emerged having paid a fixed penalty fine for a "public order offence".

Swansea FC are thought to be considering making a formal complaint to Greater Manchester police over the incident.
