Interview with Faye, from Arsenal's official site:
How have the preparations gone this week? "I’ve got training tonight [Tuesday], then again on Thursday, and then we are meeting up on Saturday at a hotel close to our Training Ground for the night so we can prepare properly. We’ll discuss tactics and go to the ground together on Sunday to prepare for the game." What is the build-up like? "It feels like a different week when you’ve got a League Cup Final. From the beginning of the week, once Sunday is out of the way and you’ve played the last game, your mind goes to the next Sunday. The fact that it’s a Cup Final against one of our biggest rivals Charlton means your ‘Cup Final head’ comes into play and you start to think of ways that you, as an individual, are going to have to perform to beat your opposing player and team. "Also as captain, I also think hard of what I will say to the girls at training to help get them all up for it and ready for it." Are you going to play because you have been injured? "I have had an ankle injury over the past four weeks but I’ve been training last week and this week. I hope to show the manager that it’s fine now. I like to give myself the best chance of course but it’s also about the team. I respect Vic and his decisions. As a captain, I look to support everyone. The most important thing is for Arsenal to do well." How strong is the motivation for this game? "I’ve won the League Cup five times and the FA Cup four times. It’s my 10th year at the Club so to win a trophy this year as captain will be really special. "I remember not playing in the FA Cup Final last year and the hurt of losing in the Semi-Final to Everton. To see the Final on television and not being part of it is annoying and distressing and that’s where I get my motivation from. That’s what drives me." Is the profile of this game that different? "There are so many more people coming to watch the games, so many more girls playing which is important, and so much more coverage of the games which makes it important for us to go out there on Sunday and give a good game. Not only on account of Arsenal but also Charlton and thus women’s football. We hope to encourage people to come to matches. "It’s a great opportunity for families to come and watch football. If they can’t afford to follow the men’s game, they can support the ladies side instead or as well." What about the game itself? "It’s all about the trophy cabinet at the end of the season and I know that the Club looks at that. It helps that we’ve beaten Charlton before in Cup finals, it’s nice to have that in your locker but we also know that they’ll be driven to perform on the day. Sometimes these things can turn around. The luck that we’ve had in the last few Cup finals has been touch and go and the results can change. We have to make sure that we are in complete control and don’t allow that to happen. We also need to push on and take our chances when we break them and keep it tight at the back and don’t let them through. They’re a team with very strong forwards who are dangerous." How confident are you of winning? "I think we’ve got good battles all over the field. We’ve played each other so many times that we know where their strengths are and they know where ours are. It’s all about the day itself; sometimes we’ll go out there and we’ll have a great game but sometimes you go out there and it doesn’t matter what you try and do. We need to make sure that everyone’s switched on, mentally and physically, to win their battles and hopefully we’ll come out on top." |
