Southampton have asked the Football Association to overturn Peter Crouch's red card and so make him available for their last game of the season.
The Saints striker was red-carded for apparently elbowing Gonzalo Sorondo during the 2-2 draw at Crystal Palace. As things stand, Crouch will be banned for Sunday's game at home to Manchester United, where a win could see Saints avoid relegation. A disciplinary panel will hear their case for wrongful dismissal on Tuesday. Crouch has been a vital figure in Southampton's relegation battle with 12 Premiership goals this season. But he will be a crucial absentee as the south-coast club head into their final game - unless the appeal is successful. Southampton are currently third from bottom and a point behind Norwich while Crystal Palace and West Brom are the other clubs aiming to avoid the drop. |
