Tranmere snap up Preston keeper

Preston goalkeeper Ben Hinchcliffe has joined Tranmere on a month's loan.
The 18-year-old has not made an appearance for the first-team at the Championship side.

Hinchcliffe has had some experience when he was loaned out to non-league side Kendal Town and put in some good displays while he was there.

The teenager will be understudy to Gavin Ward while Tranmere's number two goalkeeper John Achterberg recovers from injury.

Saturday was a very inept performance but that tackle by John Welsh was a clear sending off offensive clear as day.

Was a shame to lose Nugent so early but we will put this result behind us a carry on our promotion push while Hull fight for their lives at the other end lol

Redknapp fears Nugent fee

Quote:
Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp has reiterated his liking for David Nugent, but fears Preston may up his price tag following his England call-up.

Redknapp has been eyeing a move for Nugent for some time but pulled out of a possible deal in January after branding Preston's £6million price tag 'crazy'.

The Pompey chief could well resurrect his interest in Nugent in the summer, but fears his valuation will be much higher following his call-up to the England squad.

"I like Nugent," Redknapp told the Daily Star. "He is a good player and with Darren Bent getting injured this is a good chance for him.

"He is someone I have looked at in the past and being called up by England is sure to add a few pounds to his fee."

Preston midfielder Paul McKenna could be out for the rest of the season after picking up a groin injury in training.

The 29-year-old, who was recovering from surgery on his hernia, was set to make a return to the side for Saturday's game against Leicester.

Boss Paul Simpson told the club website: "He's not been right since he had the operation and we have booked him in to have a scan.

"We probably won't see him again this season, so it's a massive blow."

I think we have to many bottle jobs now and the pressure has got to much for them

Our form has dropped really bad over the last 2 months

BBC - Nugent's Preston future in doubt

Striker David Nugent says his future at Preston North End will be decided by whether the club win promotion. The 21-year-old Nugent, who has one year left on his contract said: "I've said to my agent if we do go up, I want to sign a new deal with Preston.

"But if we don't I might have to leave to further my career. I want to be playing in the Premiership week in, week out, that's where I need to be.

"I want it to be with Preston, but if not, it'll have to be somewhere else."

Neil Mellor has been ruled out of Sunday's visit of Birmingham after sufferering a grade one tear of his hamstring.

The striker was replaced after just 15 minutes of last night's reserve game, against Rochdale, but there was still time for him to add to his account, opening the scoring with just a minute on the clock.

He is likely to be out of action for 2/3 weeks so could return in time for the Play-Off Final should North End be involved.

Im gutted for him just when it looks like he can get back in the side a knock waste of space Ricketts out this happens.

Sunderland boss Roy Keane has admitted he admires Preston striker David Nugent.

Nugent has been in impressive form this season, scoring 17 times in the Championship and scoring a goal on his England debut against Andorra.

The 22-year-old last week vowed to sign a new deal if Preston gain promotion to the Premiership, but they currently sit two places outside the play-offs with only one game remaining.

Sunderland, however, clinched promotion when third-placed Derby were beaten by Crystal Palace on Sunday, and Keane believes Nugent has the quality to play in the top-flight.

"Nugent would get goals in the Premiership," he told the Sun. "He puts himself about."

Paul Simpson has started a clearout at Deepdale by releasing four players and placing a further four on the transfer list.

The Preston chief has moved quickly to put the disappointment of not making the play-offs behind him by beginning to re-shape his squad for next season.

Former England cap Michael Ricketts has been informed that he will not be offered fresh terms, while joining him out of the exit door are youngsters Ashley Parillion and Ben Hinchliffe, along with Czech utility man Pavel Pergl.

"Although he has been a good experienced player to have around, Michael Ricketts, I don`t feel we can justify extending his stay with us," Simpson told the club's official website.

"I haven`t seen enough to convince me that he is going to be a big assistance to us next season.

"Pavel Pergl is another who hasn't done enough to warrant a contract but I genuinely wish them all the best and hope they get fixed up elsewhere."

Simpson has decided to trim his squad further by placing Carlo Nash, Dave Hibbert, Jason Jarrett and Adam Nowland on the transfer list, as he bids to 'change the mentality' at the club.

"People will always have their opinions but I form my opinions and make my decisions from what I see day-to-day in training," he added.

"Whether it is performance levels, whether it is attitude and I have made my decision on that.

"I feel as though we need to change the mentality in the Football Club and I have made that decision to try and help with that situation.

"We'll be looking for a fee for them all without a doubt. That situation hasn't changed from the first time I had an enquiry from Fulham for Carlo, I want a fee."

BBC Morecambe bring in keeper on loan

Conference play-off finalists Morecambe have signed goalkeeper Chris Neal on loan from Preston.
The Shrimps were given special dispensation to sign Neal after keeper Steve Drench dislocated an elbow in the semi-final second-leg win over York.

Neal, 21, has made just one senior appearance for Preston.

Morecambe manager Sammy McIlroy must now decide whether to play Neal or Scott Davies in the play-off final against Exeter at Wembley on Sunday.

Preston North End defender Kelvin Wilson has joined Nottingham Forest after the player agreed terms on a move in the region of £300k.

The Preston board accepted bids from both Forest and Doncaster Rovers on Friday and the self-confessed Nottingham Forest fan travelled to the City Ground over the weekend, agreed personal terms and passed a medical to complete the move.

The 22-year-old linked up with North End towards the end of the 2005/06 season when Billy Davies signed him from Notts County but the Nottingham born defender failed to break the Sean St. Ledger - Liam Chilvers partnership last season and was limited to just 19 starts in his time at Deepdale.

Preston North End got their summer season underway in conditions that were more suited to swamp diving than association football.

Fielding two entirely different sides in each half of the game, PNE drew 1-1 with Brig in the opening 45 minutes and lost 5-1 in the second salvo.

As indicated prior to the game by manager Paul Simpson the result was never going to be an issue, the main priority putting the PNE professionals through their paces in readiness for the season kick-off on August 11th. But with pitch conditions that Deepdale Duck would have enjoyed, Simpson would have been happy just to see his side come through the test unscathed.

PNE's goals came from Lewis Neal on 29 minutes when he strolled down the the centre of the pitch before hitting a 20-yard daisy-cutter past the Brig keeper and in the second half Danny Mayor equalled Neal's impressive strike when he let rip from 25-yards out and the ball was in the back of the net even before the keeper had chance to dive.

Two minutes into the game and North End had a shot on goal when Joe Anyinsah picked up the ball on the right and unleashed a low volley but it was to be blocked by Brett Ormerod.

On five minutes Chris Sedgwick blasted a volley over the bar from 30 yards out.

North End went behind in the 13th minute when a corner came in from the right and Henderson collided with rookie centre-half Bloxham leaving Allan Fleming with the easiest of tap-ins to out the home side into the lead.

Paul Simpson's Reds were working some good stuff down the left with Lewis Neal combining well with Matt Hill, the left-back, who had inked a new two-year extension to his contract earlier in the day whipped in a cross in the 21st minute which Ormerod got a glancing header to, it went well wide.

The Lilywhites were back on level terms on 29 minutes and it was a good goal. Mawene played a ball into the centre of the park for Kevin Nicholls and he dinked a pass beyond his marker into the path Lewis Neal. Neal lifted his head to see acres of space in front of him and he set off towards goal, 30 yards out the left-winger struck a low effort beyond the outstretched arm of the Brig keeper Terry McCormick.

In the 34th minute Preston had a great opportunity to go ahead. Kevin Nicholls again with a pass which released Patrick Agyemang down the right channel, Agyemang danced past the despairing dive of Bamber Bridge's last man and squared a ball across the face of goal to Ormerod, unmarked, the ball seemed to slow down on the turf as it reached the striker and he failed to get any real purchase on the ball and it skimmed up into the air.

Three minutes before the break and Preston had a chance to go in in front when Brett Ormerod ran on to a ball through the middle and looked to dink it past the keeper, but it was a good save from the Brig keeper once again.

PNE First-Half: Henderson, Jones, Mawene, Bloxham, Hill, Anyinsah, Sedgwick, Nicholls, Neal, Ormerod, Agyemang.

The second half saw Simpson withdraw all of his professional players and sent on an inexperienced side to toil through the heavy rain. Two minutes in and the aptly named Salmon proved that you don't have to be a fish out of water when he struck to make the score 2-1 to the Unibond League side.

It was 3-1 on 50 minutes when Bamber Bridge skipper Alex Porter pounced on some PNE indecision in the box to slot the ball home.

At that point it looked like the flood-gates were about to open but North End's rookies hit back and Matty Mainwearing gave Brig something to think about when he smashed a low free-kick through the wall and warmed the hands of the keeper.

Four minutes later and PNE pulled one back, the ball was bouncing around the edge of the Brig box like a pinball and Danny Mayor took it upon himself to make the decisive move and he smashed the ball past the keeper from 25-yards out.

But the joy would be short-lived for the PNE fans who had braved the downpours and on 62 minutes Brig restored their two-goal cushion when the skipper hit a brilliant free-kick that was always curling away from Chris Thompson between the sticks.

A worrying moment for Bamber Bridge on 65 minutes came when Mark Edmeads had to be helped off the field of play with a shoulder injury, an ambulance soon arrived and it was later confirmed that the player had fractured his shoulder.

The goal deluge continued for PNE though and Salmon was again on the scoresheet when he scrambled home on 68 minutes and Danny Mahoney slotted home 77th minute penalty to complete the scoring.

PNE Second Half: Thompson, Moss, Shearwood, Appiah, C Barton, Chiocci, Maher, A Barton, Smythe, Higgins, Mainwearing.
