I don't know if this is stupid but I was thinking the other about Paul Gascoigne and the endless amount of things i'd seen him take up after retiring and this includes all the drinking however his slow decline made me think his lifestyle isn't full. He took up managering which didn't kick off to his liking and fishing kind of died but could the quiet lifestyle after football play influence on players minds? This isn't just based on Paul himself, on others aswell.

There is life after football and it doesn't just have to be quiet.

I think there are enough options and opportunities for most footballers post-retirement.

Rugby players have it right though - some dedicate themselves to the game and yet squeeze in their education and come out of the sport with qualifications that lead into top jobs for prolonged careers.

Sadly for Gazza he's a different breed. He is and always will be a waster - you can't fault him for trying to turn it around but he can't really.

There is a topic in the Sunday Times sports section where it has photos of old teams (not just football - recent one was Zimbabwe's women's hockey team after they won an Olympic gold in 1980).

They have a little description of the event, and then do a "Where are they now" about each person on the photo.

It's always interesting to have a look at the diverse careers that footballers have taken - quite a lot are still well known, as managers, pundits etc - but some ended up doing things like running their own businesses (some large, some small), driving minicabs, and some appear to have lost contact with their club or died.

Surprisingly, it's rare that there is an old team photo without someone having died, and there seems to be a similar percentage if you look at teams from 1960s or 1990s Confused
