1899 Hoffenheim completed a remarkable rise from the regional amateur leagues to the Bundesliga when they secured promotion with a 5-0 win against Greuther Fuerth on Sunday.

The team from Sinsheim, a village in south-western Germany, have been backed by Dietmar Hopp, the co-founder of software giant SAP, since the start of the 1990s when they were just another amateur club.

After a sure and steady rise to the third division, Hopp's money brought in former Schalke 04 boss Ralf Rangnick, as well as several former Bundesliga players.

Hoffenheim's current ground holds 5,000 fans but they are building a new 30,000-capacity ground, due for completion in 2009.

They went up to the second division this time last year and Sunday's victory secured promotion to the top flight at the first attempt, behind Borussia Moenchengladbach and Cologne.

Those three teams will replace the relegated clubs Nuremberg, Hansa Rostock and MSV Duisburg.

from espn website.

An incredible story and i hope they survive in there first year of top flight football

I don't like all this at all.
In Germany, every football club has to own more than 50% of it's shares to make a takeover by any investor impossible. This makes sure that football isn't all decided by money and who has the better investor.
I think this is the right way because clubs have to be economical, give talents a chance and get their money from success, and not from a patron.
Just take a look at Chelsea. They made a deficit of €100 million last year. That's ridiculous. They just buy any player they want for any amount of money without having to achieve success. How is this a fair competition?

I deeply admire clubs like Ajax with their excellent youth program or Bayern, who operate economically with the money they earn from success, who don't have a big investor and still are among the richest and most successful clubs in the world.

As for Hoffenheim, they don't have the fanbase to stand on their own feet for the next decades. They don't get enough money from merchandising or ticket sales. If their patron drops out, they're totally ruined and will disappear from the scene in no time.

So far I've been really happy with the Bundesliga because our clubs aren't deep in depth like in Italy or Spain and they aren't bought up buy multi-billionaires in England (also Italy).
We have a fair competition and I wouldn't trade it for 10 Champions League wins.

Very similar to Wigan and Gretna I guess, a small team with no history or fanbase who just bought their way through the leagues. They might survive a few years but eventually the money will run out and they'll end up like Gretna with a huge amount of money to pay but with no income coming in.
