Barcelona have confirmed that Lionel Messi will miss both legs of their UEFA Champions League semi-final clash with Milan.
The gifted Argentina international is to fly out to his homeland this week as he bids to recover from a thigh strain that has kept him on the sidelines. Messi has not lined up for the Catalan giants since the beginning of March, when he tore a thigh muscle in his side's elimination of Chelsea. Argentine national team doctor Donato Villani has confirmed that Messi is likely to miss the remainder of their domestic campaign but is hopeful that the diminutive schemer could be back for the European Cup final should Barca dispose of Milan. Messi has emerged as one of the world's brightest talents this season and his absence will not just worry Barcelona but also Argentina, with the World Cup looming close on the horizon. "It's a complicated sort of tear," said Villani. "He's going to need three or four more weeks treatment. "In my opinion he will be ready to play only one more game this season and that will be the Champions League final." Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard admits he is unsure as to when his player will be available again for selection but has nevertheless backed Messi to return from Argentina stronger for the experience. "He needs more time," said Rijkaard. "It might be good for him to have a change of scenery and recover completely. He will return when he has recovered." |
