Well done, an important point i was just about to make that seems to have gotten lost in all the bantering (trying to shake Del Piero 10 out of his stupor) back and forth. Italy being -3 in goal difference could very well come back to bite them when the other two nations have a point to show as well as a 0 goal difference...

Not only are they going to have to win, but they are now required to win handily....... Which they can do, but will they?

isn't it decided on what the result was when the two teams played each other Question

Yes, it will, but with these groups, because you only play each other once, the head-to-head basis can easily settle nothing (i.e. a draw).

It's quite possible it could go down to goal difference - it's happened many a time before.

This is the tie-breaking criteria for Euro 2004. I can't find anything for 08 but i assume it's basically the same, bar the altering of certain dates i.e. for competitions:

Quote:
Tie-breaking criteria

For teams that finish level on points, the following tie-breakers are used:

1. greater number of points in the matches between the teams in question;
2. greater goal difference in matches between the teams in question;
3. greater number of goals scored in matches between the teams in question;
4. greater goal difference in all group games;
5. greater number of goals scored in all group games;
6. higher coefficient derived from Euro 2004 and 2002 World Cup qualifiers (points obtained divided by number of matches played);
7. fair play conduct in Euro 2004;
8. drawing of lots.

If two teams playing in the final group game have identical records going into that match, and the match ends in a draw, then a penalty shootout would be played, rather than using the above criteria. Euro 2004 marked the introduction of this procedure, although it was not required to be used. The same procedure will be used at Euro 2008, if need be.

France-Romainia : no comment , it was not a football matchand French fall in the romanian trap.
And holland/Italy, waohhhhhh Razz , hope friday it will be as spectacular as this match...

As i said , now we know that certainly Italy or France will fall....(may be both of them if romania decide to play football)

even if we loose against holland next friday we can go through if we win against Italy..
all is still possible.

Italy/France will certainly give the second one, i find that really funny

Surprised

this group is really the most exciting group....i can't wait Smile

The interesting thing is, if the Netherlands draw against France and even if Romania lose to Italy, the Romanian's could go through ahead of the Dutch by beating them on the last day and drawing level on 4 pts.

The only way Holland can assure qualification is by beating France.

The group is certainly no foregone conclusion.

Romania isn't under any pressure, unlike Italy after biggest failure in this cup so far. I also never believed in France, as well. Holland and Romania will qualify, I hope Smile

FANTASTIC!!!! We've beaten the French!!!! Please let Van Basten lose the game against Romania, in that case they will follow us to the quarters!
First half was not good from the Dutch side, but thankfully Engelaar got replaced by ''the phenomenom'' Robben! How great was he, with an assist and with the goal of the tournament!
Also the Dutch crowd was fantastic, 70 % of the stadium was Orange with another 40.000 fans in the city of Bern!

HUP HOLLAND HUP

Wowzers, what a great set of matches from this group tonight, even the Romanians put on a good display! That puts Holland top of their group, and they'll win this group aswell. Thoroughly deserved aswell tbh, they played two great counter-attacking games, and with a goal difference of +6 over 2 games, they fully deserve to top their group.

Now on tuesday, the crucial match is France VI Italy. Both teams are level on points with 1 point a piece. It will be interesting to see whats happens between the two world cup finalists.
Also the other match will be interesting, but Holland could be just a tad to strong for Romania, although they have got a draw out of their two matches. So it could go anywhere...

Romania could lose and go through though, if Italy-France is a draw and Romania lose by 2 or less goals (and some further permutations which are a bit confusing to go into).

It's a great half, and for the sake of that side of the draw i hope both Italy and France go out. I like the Italians but i'd much rather see one of Spain, Holland, Romania and Sweden in the final. It'll mean much more to them.

It's great to see all four sides in it with a game to go though.

Hmm?

Holland 6 points
Romania 2 points
Italy 1 point
France 1 point

Holland are already winners, only three are in it now really.

Yeah i did realise that when i was writing it, but left it as it was. When i mean "in it" i mean can qualify really; none of the sides are eliminated.

Yea i agree with that. But then again, when does whatever you expect some true in this tournament lol.

It would be interesting if both world cup finalists were to be knocked out in the group stage though...
