So Julie Foudy has become a regular as ESPN's football analyst and commentator and I must say, she is absolutely terrible. She started during the 2006 World Cup, and I didn't think much of it as they used her periodically, but now that she's a regular, I absolutely can't stand it.

For someone who's been around football for so long, she just sounds lost when analyzing a game. It also seems like she doesn't know the players (stars or not). After listening to her, I honestly don't think she actually watches/keeps track of European football.

Have you heard her commentating? If so, what do you think of it?

She sounds ok when she's doing the women's game , but I've only got a handful of dvd's with her commentating on.

Not sure if your talking about the men's game or not , as you mention European footie I presume so. I doubt she watches much European footie but she must be ok if she's got the regular gig.

She's currently a match analyst for the Euro 08, and she does the MLS matches as the person in the booth analyzing the game (prematch, halftime, post match). I haven't heard her do anything for the womens, as they don't show the womens here on ESPN.

But as the Euros are in full bloom right now, her coverage of it is terrible.

I think ESPN hired her because she's a known player of the US womens teams, just like they hired Eric Wynalda as an analyst due to his history with the US mens team. Eric was also terrible in his analysis and commentating (he was more of the annoying commentator as he thinks he was better than everyone thought he knew everything). Needless to say, ESPN fired him and went with JP Dellacamera to team up with Tommy Smyth and Janusz Michallik.

Maybe they should hire Hope since she's just great and can do everything. Laughing Wink Mia Ham would be good I think as she's always been a team player.

She's pretty good on the women's but I've not heard her on the men's game.

It does bug me when you've got male commentators saying the names of the player's wrong. There was one guy on Eurosport who repeatedly kept calling Abby Wambach's name wrong. Three bloody games and he still couldn't get it right Rolling Eyes

I must admit though the guys who commentate on the women's game do know what there talking about , especially Gavin Peacock.

ROFL. The mispronunciations of names is a whole nother story. Laughing Not so much by the actual commentators as they have Derek Rae and Andy Gray along with Tommy Smyth and Janusz Michallik who all do keep track of European football. But the anchors on ESPN Sportscenter butcher pretty much every European name.

You know they can't say the name of the French player properly on Sky like Pirès. It is pronounced piresse not pireze for example.

Laughing Julie just mispronounced Benzema while talking about France. And that's an easy one.

Let's face it, ESPN has nobody once you get past Derek Rae. I may be the only one, but I get tired of hearing Tommy Smyth second guess all the time only to be proven wrong on a replay. I also feel he is overly opinionated. Also, I know how everyone disliked Wynalda, but at least he had the guts to criticize a national coach (Bruce Arena) when everyone else remained tight lipped.

ESPN needs to hire someone that has been calling games for years, as of right now, it's very painful to listen to........ Cool

Wynalda was crap. He was a critic, not a constructive analyst or commentator. He was always negative to everything on the pitch and swore he could do/knew better than anyone out there.

When a team is setting up for a corner or a free kick around the box and all the sudden you see Wynalda drawing with his little pen on the screen indicating where the free kick should go and who should be running in and such gets annoying after the second time. How about all his critique about Blanco. He bashed Blanco left and right at any opportunity he had. Blanco would score a goal to grab the win for his club, and Wynalda would come out and say it was easy and given to him or he was offsides or yada yada yada. He was also quite adamant that Blanco would be a bust in the MLS, but guess he's not saying that now is he?

Yeah he might have been the only person to speak out against Bruce Arena, but that doesn't justify for all his boneheadedness. He's a critic and should probably just write a little column in some little local newspaper somewhere, but definitely doesn't belong on a major network as a football analyst or commentator.

As I said, Wynalda was the only one to address Arena's shortcomings, so I give him credit for that. All the over stuff you wrote about I didn't address because I can agree with you.

I made just the one point on him, and I'll stick by it. If you want to disagree with it, thats fine, I'm more then willing to 'agree to disagree'....... Wink
