Former England captain Terry Butcher is talking to Sydney FC about a possible move to manage the Australian A-League side.
The 47-year-old Motherwell boss has been lined up for the job to replace former coach Pierre Littbarski.
And Sydney's chief executive Tim Parker believes the deal for the English coach could be close.
"We have a preferred candidate whom we are closest to signing. It's Terry Butcher," he told Australia's Sunday Morning Herald.
"There's been an ongoing discussion with Terry for a while, through our chairman. He's interested, which is very flattering," he said.
Trinidad & Tobago forward Dwight Yorke is the Australian club's highest profile player, but Littbarski moved on because of the financial troubles with the team.
Despite professing a love for Motherwell and Scotland, Butcher has admitted he is seriously considering the move.
"I am happy at Fir Park, but I would be interested in what they have to say," he revealed.
"If you are linked with clubs that means you must be doing something right."
The decision is likely to be put on hold until Motherwell face Dundee United in their last game of the Scottish Premier League season.
