In January 2007, Klasnic suffered kidney failure. He received a transplant from his mother shortly after, but his body rejected the kidney. Couple months later, he received a kidney from his father. Now a year and a half later, he completes his comeback with a goal for Croatia in a 1-0 win over Poland.
Klasnic is the first player to take part at the European Championship after a kidney transplant and becomes one of a small number of professional athletes to return after an organ transplant.
He now wears a fiberglass shield to protect his kidney while on the pitch as a kick to the region could be life-threatening.
"I'm happy that I'm here at all," Klasnic said. "I'm proud to be a part of this team. "I hope my coach will think of me when we play the quarterfinals."
We are really glad that we have him in our team after that harrowing experience of his," coach Slaven Bilic said. "It is amazing that he came back to such a high professional level so quickly.
