On TV it would have to be Van Basten's in real life, Keane vs Bayern 1999.

The best goal I have eevr seen was Mark Delaney's for cardiff against Chester in 1998 when we beat them 6-0 in the FA cup, he ran from our own six yard box took on 5 players and then placed as hot from about 10 yards out into the bottom right corner. That was the only goal he ever scored fro Cardiff before going to Aston Villa.

On TV either Ryan Gigg's against Arsenal in '99, Erik Edman's this season or Dennis Bergkamp's against Newcastle (The one were he flicks the ball around Newcastle's defender and taps it into the net.) The one I've seen at matches I've gone to is probably Hasslebaink's against County or Stefan Oake's 40 yarder against Yeovil.

are you all forgetting Gazza's goal where he passed the ball over a defender to HIMSELF the fired a rocket into the net

--------

best goal I have ever seen on tape or in person - Pele (don't know the match) receiving a pass from the half line - does this amazing bicycle kick straight past an absolutely flabbeergasted gaol keeper - even Pele's teammates were gobsmacked - it was pure poetry - apparently one of the first bicycle kicks he had ever done in a match

Sieg
01-07-2005, 05:22 PM
I find Owen's goals very pedestrian, a little turn here and then knock it in from 3 metres, hardly pretty, though admittedly effective.

I prefer to look back on a long line of superb penalties against the English team.

Fifa World Rankings

1 Brazil 0 829 -2
2 Czech Republic 0 790 6
3 Argentina 0 785 7
4 Netherlands 1 783 24
5 France -1 765 -4
6 Mexico 1 759 6
7 England -1 757 3
8 Portugal 1 755 15
9 Spain -1 747 -5
10 USA 0 744 10

*cough* Where are Germany?? *cough*

And look at the above posts, and you will remember that Owen scored a cracking goal against Argentina on the highest level.

Sieg

Fifa Rankings are about as meaningful as British cookbooks.

In the words of Juergen Klinsmann "The Fifa Rankings are a bad joke, as Fifa have assigned a lower co-efficient to Germany's test matches than to world cup qualifiers of other teams." In words that even Sun-readers can understand this means that Germany's 2:2 with Argentina has a lower value than England's 2:2 against Austria.

If anybody seriously ascribes more than passing meaning to Fifa Rankings I am surprised. Surely at the latest after Germany almost became world-champion with a ridiculously low ranking whilst England with a higher ranking was again among the also-rans it should be clear that rankings mean squat. What counts is tournament results. In the last major tournament Germany almost became World champion. What about England?

Germany's performances against Argentina and Brazil show that Germany is back in world class form. That's not to say that England's 2:0 victory over Azerbaidjan is not equally impressive...lol.

To rank teams like the USA, Netherlands, Sweden or Mexico (whom Germany have also just beaten) ahead of Germany is frankly ludicrous.

O Dogg
01-07-2005, 07:12 PM
In the last major tournament Germany almost became World champion. What about England?

Unfortunately for you, I don't agree :)

Group D
Czech Rep
Latvia
Germany
Holland

This is a table from Euro 2004, which indeed was the last major tournament that Germany participated in.

Take a little look at that table. I believe the teams that qualified for the Quarter finals in that group was Holland and Czech Rep - correct??

Holland made it through to the Semi's. So if you are going by major tournament results, then great, you have shot yourself in the foot.

I do agree however that the Fifa ranking system is flawed, and not 100% accurate, but they give people an idea about where your team is at.

I also think Holland are a better team than Germany.

Now create a new topic if you wish to discuss this further - as banter between fans is always fun, but this thread really does have to go back on topic.

Sieg
01-07-2005, 07:19 PM
Actually the last major tournament Germany participated in Germany finished in 3 place overall against world-class opposition from across the World. There were more world class teams than at the last Euro championship.

Admittedly, Germany was unfortunate in that Euro tournament, particularly as Germay completely outclassed the Netherlands with superb attacking football while Holland hid in defence and yet Germany was unfortunate not to get the much deserved victory and the story repeated itself against the Czechs whom Germany thoroughly outclassed, only to be hit on the counter. Ditto for Latvia, another negative play misfortunte where Germany should rightfully have won.

If Holland is a better team than Germany then how come Germany humiliated Holland the last time they played and the dutch were just lucky not to get thrashed?

twmcat
01-07-2005, 07:23 PM
Just a technicality before back to topic:
Sieg actually says "Germany almost became world champion" which means last World Cup, not Euro.
And they did reach the final after all. No UK team has done that away from home.

twmcat
01-07-2005, 07:27 PM
And if "best goal you've ever seen" means one which made you happiest, rather than quality, Michael Thomas's goal for AFC at anfield at the end of 1988-89 still makes me feel good.

Sieg
01-07-2005, 07:57 PM
Fair enough, let's get back on topic, on twmcat's criteria I would have to list all goals in the German comeback against France in the 1982 world cup

twmcat
01-07-2005, 08:40 PM
Schumacher's action in that game, and the fact that he got away with it, doesn't make it a happy event for many people.

Sieg
01-07-2005, 08:51 PM
And yet nobody complains about unsporting behaviour when Germans are the victims. When Rudi Voeller was ejected after being spat on by Rijkaard little was heard and years later all one hears is jokes about Rijkaard's disgraceful behaviour. He's even given a top post in Spain.

I never liked Schumacher, but let's face it, it was a split-second collision, there was no malice there. An unfortunate accident. It in no way marred perhaps the greatest football night the world has ever seen.

twmcat
01-07-2005, 09:00 PM
Only for Germans.

01-07-2005, 09:15 PM
Name another night of world-cup football with so many goals, such an unheard of coming from the back heroic story-line with a place in a world cup final at stake.

I bet you can not name a similar game.

Plus some of the German goals were utterly magnificent, like the bycylce-kick goal by Fisher.

That was surely the greatest night of football the world has ever seen.

How about North Korea v Portugal 1966 World Cup, Ayresome Park?

3-0, then Eusebio did his bit.

Sieg
01-07-2005, 09:42 PM
That is probably the closest you can get, alas North Korea are not headliners like France or Germany. Also, a final place was not at stake, so I still think France Germany narrowly beats it.

Still a fantastic game from what I have seen.

Best goal I've ever seen was our very own Dennis Bergkamp for Holland against Argentina in the World Cup quarters of 98. In the dying seconds, a long ball forward to Dennis who then executes probably the best first touch ever before finishing superbly. The quality of the goal and the importance of it make it my favourite goal ever by one of my favourite ever players.

Best goal ive seen live has to be the fourth of Andy Preece's goals for carlisle in the 5 - 2 win over Runcorn:

Rouncorn corner

Preece heads out

Runcorn cross back in, only for preece to head out, and run after it, Runcorn player has a shot from just outside the area, which Andy Preece throws himself at - and comes away with the ball. After beating 4 players, he scores top corner from 40 yards.

All at the age of 38. wow.

One that i have always remembered is the goal from Youri Djorkaeff in the game between Roma and Inter. He was positioned just outside the box and hit the most amazing overhead kick in to the top corner of the net, it was fantastic.

That and George Weah's infamous half way line run and David Beckhams crazy lob over Neil Sullivan.

Oh yeah and Tony Yeboah's overhead kick for Leed's as well was also excellent.

So Many! I could mention more but i could also go on forever! :D :D

You can't beat distance so i propose a tie!

Beckhams lob from halfway and Pedro Mendes' one on the same ground.

The tiebreaker is that Mendes goal didnt get on the results sheet so lets give him some credit here eh?

If you can't beat distance, I'm surprised Big Jono's missed Pat Jennings' goal (when still at Spurs) in the Charity Shield at OT in the 60's - booted it upfield from his own area and the bounce beat Alec Stepney. Must be 80 yards plus. It was on tv some time ago in a "what happens next" or something.
