Relegated clubs Southampton and Norwich have been handed tough trips to League One opposition in the first round draw for the Carling Cup.

The Saints must travel to Southend and the Canaries are at MK Dons in the week beginning August 22.

The other side who dropped out of the Premiership this summer, Crystal Palace, have been drawn at home to Walsall.

Chris Turner will get the chance to put one over the club that sacked him when his Stockport side entertain Sheffield Wednesday in the first round.

Turner left Hillsborough in September last year and while his replacement Paul Sturrock guided the Owls into the Championship via the play-offs, the Hatters suffered relegation to League Two.

Hartlepool will host north east rivals Darlington for the first time since Pools escaped from the old third division and Football League new boys Barnet and Carlisle travel to Bristol City and Burnley respectively.
