Morecambe boss Sammy McIlroy has penned a new contract at Christie Park.

The former Northern Ireland chief has committed himself to The Shrimpers until 2009 and his assistant Mark Lilis has also signed on the dotted line.

Morecambe, who won promotion to the Football League last season, moved to tie down McIlroy - who was recently linked with the Preston North End job.

"There was no question of us not accepting the offer when it was made. I was more than happy to sign on and I am delighted that Mark Lillis will be with me as well," McIlroy told the club's website.

"Mark has worked with me for a long time and he knows all about me and how I like to work and we hope we can do all we can to take Morecambe forward.

"These have been exciting times for Morecambe and I have had magnificent support from the board, the players and the fans in my time here."

Morecambe have made a fantastic start to life in the Football League and are sitting 9th. The new contract is definitely warranted.
