The first final of the season and the biggest game so far - Spurs v Chelsea - Ramos v Grant.

Can Spurs upset the odds and take the cup from Chelsea? Its plain to see the best team on paper is Chelsea but the resurgence of Spurs has made them contenders for competitions like these.

Late rumours are that Chelsea are going with 4-4-2 with Drogba, Anelka, Terry, and Lamps playing.

Chelsea should win comfortably. They're much stronger.

Didn't even know it was today.

Big Jono
24-02-2008, 01:34 PM
Could be stronger tho, Cole and Ballack should be in there for sure!

I hope he has felt pressures to play Lampard and Terry when they areshort of match fitness, huge letoff that Ballacks been dropped for Lamps imo.

J-Axe
24-02-2008, 01:39 PM
Well I'm not a fan of Lampard but it shouldn't really effect the overall rhythm of their game.

I think Spurs will give them a great game, but just can't see them winning.

If they hold out for extra-time, who knows? Chelsea are modern masters of cups and finals.

Mark Lawrenson agrees with you though Jono. He feels that the changes Chelsea have made will effect them and Spurs will go on to win the tie. ,;)

Big Jono
24-02-2008, 01:42 PM
Every one of our players will have to play out of their skin to win IMO, and we will need a little bit of referee luck too.

Sticky T
24-02-2008, 01:50 PM
What the hell are they doing dropping Ballack?! Why the hell is Mikel starting?!

Ballack should be well ahead of of Mikel, and i even little lover boy Lamps on recent form.

Oh yeah Jono, got a stream for this match?

Anyone, help!! ahhh!!

The ones i've tried aren't working.

I still can't believe Mikel has been selected ahead of Joe Cole and Ballack.

Oh and how is Malouda not even on the bench?!

How about the guy that got you guys to the Final? As to who could save that, I dunno. But like I said, 3 free kicks, he doesn't move on any of them. The first one from Lampard would have gone in also if it wasn't for Woodgate.

Anyone who does there job and covers the area they are supposed to.

The wall was covering the left side Robbo was supposed to cover the right hand side and he didnt, he gave Drogba half the goal to aim at.

J-Axe

Robinson is a weak spot, and he's been playing poorly for a long time. There's no argument there.

Cerny impressed me when he came in. I think he's safer and more reliable than Robinson.

Chelsea should cruise on to the win.

Cerny? Robbo is a better keeper than him and he wouldnt have saved that. Drogba just too good, our fault for giving them two sighters from the same spot then another foul right there.

Blew all our good work, just glad the whistle wrnt before we lost another so Ramos can prepare the guys for the defensive wall Chelsea will now put up.

We definately need a new keeper in my opinion not just because of this game but Robbo has been poor of late, Cermy is starting to make mistakes aswell and he has been talking about possible clubs to join once his loan runs out.

Although we had most of the possesion we looked afraid to commit players forward incase Chelsea hit us on the counter attack but thats just a risk we are going to have to take. Chelsea love playing awful football getting everyone behind the ball then waiting for other teams to get comfortable and start commiting players then hitiing them on the counter. Soooo Boring.

Big Jono
24-02-2008, 03:04 PM
Im not arguing its our weak point, both arent good enough but no need to lynch Robbo for that. Zokora on the other hand for giving away those freekicks :x Shame cos he was having a superb game other than that.

Half time changes anyone???

Id think about Hudd for the carded Zok but might stick it out and see if Zokora settles down second half. Wish we had Ohara on the bench, he would love this and really get stuck into these cunts.

Sticky T

Getting a new keeper is a given. Robbo is sh*t, we all know that. Cerny isn't much better. Neither can be relied on.

hibserpool
24-02-2008, 03:15 PM
the goal was definately robbo's fault. the ball went in the side that he was supposed to be covering. the shot wasnt a rocket, nor was it at an akward height for the keeper, if his positioning right it would have been bread and butter for him. im sure if it was at the other end cech would most definately have saved it....comfortably at that.

Sticky T

How Berbatov can do that i don't know. It was like a penalty in training. So unbelievably cool for a penalty in such a high pressure situation.

The guy has balls. Either that or he's so supremely confident, that the possibility of failing to convert a cheeky penalty like that never comes into his mind.

Bad miss from Zokora.

things were doing fine till the unnecessary free kick which ended up a get in by the beautiful kick by drogba.. and keano almost got the chance to return them with a shot..

and i was a little bit upset when i saw zokora trying to get the bounced ball.. while berbatov could've probably scored if he didn't get too nervous to realize that berbatov's standing there all along..

He was there cheering with the trophy. He looked very happy. I think he accepts that Ramos did the right thing for the team, but at the time he frustrated because he was playing quite well, and wasn't taken off because of his performance.

I think some people are being a little harsh on him. I'm sure it was just the frustration that got the better of him.

We got European football for next season, no pressure in the league at all now can focus on the UEFA Cup.

Convince Berbatov we and ramos are winners and he can acheive whatever he likes with us.

Give King a trophy to lift, best part of the day.

When he was substituted he went straight down the tunnel without going near huddlestone who came on. Jono i heard that Chimbonda has apologised to Ramos and the main coaching staff and to the players and Ramos has accepted that as he was angry in such a big game.

Not sure if its true though, i heard he did it during the end of the 90 mins and the start of the extra time.

I forgive him, theres no room for hate on a day like this

Exactly. I think i would of reacted the same in such a huge game in our season.

I would of loved it if Zokora had scored his first spurs goal when he had the glorious chance.

I don't want to hear anyone say ''it's ONLY the Carling Cup''. This is huge for Tottenham. They've beaten two huge teams. Chelsea take this as seriously as anything. Chelsea have been treating this competition with respect for years now, and that's upped the prestige of it.

Stuff that man, a Cup is a Cup and you should be as proud and as happy as anything.

Agreed, At the end of the day it's silverwear and only a select few win something at come the end of the season. When we beat United in the Carling cup it was the sweetest of our victories in that competition but it was a great feeling when we beat Birmingham back in 2001 also. A cup is a cup to quote J-Axe again.

This is such a great result on so many levels.

We got European football for next season, no pressure in the league at all now can focus on the UEFA Cup.

Convince Berbatov we and ramos are winners and he can acheive whatever he likes with us.

Give King a trophy to lift, best part of the day.

Woody and Hutton are Yids now.

Stuff the title, its onlky the Carling Cup but the other things it means to us is priceless.

Great result RAMOS AND POYET AND THE CC WINNING TEAM 2008 ! AND OUR FANS ALL LEGENDS!

with European football assured we can concentrate on beating PSV! and heading for our next Cup Final! :D

:D What a result. The last 10 minutes of extra time was absolute torture!

There are so many reasons why this game was so important for us. Not only have we got a trophy in the cabinet but it's a huge boost for our prospects next season as well; there's a much better chance of Berbs staying now, team spirit and togetherness will obviously improve and we've managed to secure European football. And, perhaps most crucially of all: the belief is now there.

I wonder what the odds of Spurs doing a double were before the start of the season...

Ramos' Postmatch Thoughts....

Tottenham boss Juande Ramos admitted their Carling Cup final victory was 'special'.

The Spaniard claimed his fifth trophy in less than two years but the former Sevilla coach was still delighted with his first major triumph as Spurs manager.

"It's always a tremendous satisfaction to win a trophy but I would say this one has a special flavour to it because it was against a team who are supposedly superior to us," said the Spaniard.

"It's like when I was at Sevilla and we won against Barcelona or Real Madrid, it adds a special flavour.

"It's a great satisfaction to win a trophy especially for a club and the fans who haven't had success for such a long time.

"For a club as big as Tottenham a long time seems even longer, so it is tremendous.

"Success always comes for everybody - for the players first as they are the ones who carry out the work we do.

"It is not a personal battle [between coaches] - it was simply that Spurs were the better team on the day."

Ramos admitted that the fact the club have secured a Uefa Cup spot, eases the pressure on them to win in Europe.

"Qualifying for Europe next season makes everything calmer now because it removes a huge pressure on the team," he said.

"We are all calmer now that we have qualified for Europe again, which takes some pressure off the club. This has been a unique experience and one we hope to repeat.

"For the moment we will enjoy the victory. Next week we are back in the Premier League and we have to concentrate on that, we are also still in the Uefa Cup.

"The team has been improving in terms of the security and confidence they feel. Today has reaffirmed that.

"The players have shown they can concentrate to be serious enough to fight with the best of them.

"They key is not making mistakes and they showed they could concentrate on that."

I have to confesse that I am a huge admirer of mourinho, not only of Mourinho but any coach that shows something special about him like Ramos. You might be a decent coach, which I don't doubt that Grant is and you might even have an assitant with a great reputation but that special skill, that all great managers have, of be able to push your players to give that 10 % extra when your phisical strenght is abandoning the team, that power to motivate your men when everything seems to be going against you is something that only the true great managers have. Unfortunaly for Avram Grant he lacks to many of this qualities!

Congratulations Spurs, very well done!

Robbie Keane truly deserves a medal. Such a class player who is terribly underrated. Worked his way up through poorer levels and always stands out even when working alongside poor quality at all levels.

Bangs in goals for fun at Spurs and works like a demon for them. Passionate, truly dedicated and now a Champion, he is a Spurs Legend.

Spurmeon - Completely agree with that on Ramos. Look at what hes done with no preseason training, someone else team, only one January window. The man is a trophy machine, he has now won his last 5 out of 6 cup finals, the only loss being after one of his players collapsed and died on the field.

To have delivered a piece of silverware 4 months into the job is fantastic from Mr Ramos & Co :D

First things first: many thanks to you guys congratulating us for this tremendous and thoroughly deserved Cup final victory :)

I had a great day yesterday – scored a brilliant volley in a 4-1 Sunday league win, and then went to a packed bar to watch our boys deal with Chelsea. I don’t remember too much after that, but it’s all good!! ,8)

This is a victory for entertaining football. Forget all that rubbish about Avram Grant’s Chelsea showing more flair and attacking instinct; they were dire. Devoid of any real commitment to win the match, they adopted a safety first approach whose main aim was not to lose. Spurs on the other hand showed more ambition, took more risks and were intent on winning - thankfully it paid off.
This positive attitude to playing football symbolises the ethos of the club: Audere Est Facere - To Dare Is To Do.

The best managers can make an impression on the match, both before and during it.. In this sense, Ramos defeated Grant hands down. The non selection of Joe Cole and Michael Ballack I found completely baffling, and Nicholas Anelka is not a winger. When Grant decided to take off Michael Essien, that pretty much summed up his day for me; it was a daft move. For our first XI, I personally would have chosen Cerny over Robinson, but his crucial save from Kalou at the death justified his selection, although he was at fault for Drogba’s free kick and flapped at a couple of crosses (we will definitely bring in a new keeper, for sure). But overall Ramos was the clear winner in the tactical battle. His changes after the break shifted the balance of the match and gave us the impetus to drive forward, putting Chelsea firmly on the back foot. Grant didn’t know how to react, and when he did, it was too late. Jose Mourinho would have seen the danger coming but Grant just looked on as the game passed him by. In fact, the extra time team talk was performed by Steve Clarke and John Terry – Grant just watched on passively.

There were several excellent performances by us, but for me the two centre backs stood out. Woodgate and King nullfied the considerable threat of Drogba and Anelka, and this gave us the security to push forward. Berbatov was calmness personified in taking that penalty - I thought he would miss, as it's just typical Spurs to mess things up like that. We got lucky with Woodgate's header but when you add up the amount of clear chances both sides had, I reckon we deserved that luck. We outplayed them.

Grant's post match comments were embarrassing. Firstly he suggested that the linesman cannot give the handball, then he questions the referee for blowing the final whistle just as Kalou was about to shoot. What he forgets is that the Halsey played an extra minute of added on time in extra time i.e. he should have blown the whistle well before that. Kalou’s shot hit the post anyway, so there was nothing to claim for. Chelsea’s reaction at the end should be looked at by the FA. The likes of Terry and Drogba harassing and chasing referees when things don’t go their way sums up what a bunch of spoilt, arrogant bad losers they are. Well done to Joe Cole though; he was very congratulating of Spurs and was philosophical on not starting the game. I feel sorry for him because only played the last 20 minutes despite being their best player for the last few weeks.

What does the future hold for us? Who knows. More moments like this I sincerely hope. But now people will appreciate why Daniel Levy was 100% right to axe Martin Jol and bring in Juande Ramos. This guy is the Real Deal. To win the League Cup within first few months in charge is incredible. But I’m not going to get carried away. I’m not expecting us to win the UEFA Cup but it would be very welcome if we did. For next season, 4th place is the clear target.

There’s still a lot of work to be done and Ramos knows it. But for now, I’m happy to be drunk (literally!) in the ecstasy of winning at Wembley, just like in the Glory Glory days. :P

COME ON YOU SPURS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good post Johaldo.

Particularly the comment about Essien being taken off. That was a sham.

I retract my comments about Jol and stability. Although Jol was a good Manager, Ramos seems to have a special quality that you can't ignore. If he sticks by Spurs long enough to give them stability though, I don't know. He is a foreign Manager who will attract many big Clubs for his signature no matter how well or poorly he goes on to do at Spurs.

Great start though.

THE ENCLOSURE
25-02-2008, 06:22 PM
I agree Jol had to go , and Levy has been proved right in his pursuit of Ramos, it was the way he went about it that made us look bad . Lets hope this is a sign of things to come , stability and a few players that Ramos wants in the summer , a full pre - season under his new methods and you never know we might , just might , be able to make that leap into the the top 4 . I think the part that Poyet has played in all this has not been mentioned . When Levy got him i thought " WTF is he doing " but i now have to agree Levy was right on 2 counts .

This is where I would be worried if I was a Spurs fan (thank God I'm not though  :P). He hasn't stayed with one club longer than 3 years I believe. And has shown he's willing to leave a good club (Sevilla) for a different opportunity/challenge.

Cheers, J :)

For me personally, Michael Essien is the best footballer in the Premiership. His quality is undeniable, his energy is unlimited and his versatility is so useful. He can play virtually anywhere and can adapt to any situation i.e. I would only take him off if he was injured so badly that he needed to come off. I was happy as larry when I saw his number come up from the fourth official.

Good point about the vultures sniffing after Ramos. That's why it's imperative that we get the stadium redeveloped and secure Champions' League football as soon as possible so he can fulfil his dreams with us.

Good point about the vultures sniffing after Ramos. That's why it's imperative that we get the stadium redeveloped and secure Champions' League football as soon as possible so he can fulfil his dreams with us.

He left a team that was already in the Champions League. Granted Arsenal gave him a sour taste in his mouth after the first match.

So for Tottenham to add more seats to the stadium and getting a CL spot doesn't secure much in terms of Ramos.

How much is he getting paid now compared to his days at Sevilla? Anyone know? Or maybe he's one that gets bored quickly and looks for new challenges?

Johaldo8

Yes I know he left Sevilla when they were in the Champions' League, but maybe he thinks Spurs are a bigger club than Sevilla? The money helped too, no doubt. Hopefully he feels that he can achieve he wants to at White Hart Lane.

Nice post there Joey - I agree with all of the points you make.

On the subject of the commitment of Ramos: As far as I know it's always been a huge ambition of his to manage in the English Premier League. It doesn't look likely that any of the 'top 4' will be changing their manager any time soon and even if they were, Ramos wouldn't necessarily be considered to replace any of them. So, when an offer came in from a club which has the potential to grow and challenge the biggest clubs in England, he must've thought it an ideal opportunity, and one which doesn't come along too often. Let's not forget that he's not the youngest of managers and if he's to achieve his goals in English football then there's no time like the present to get started.

It's highly likely that some big clubs from various countries will be in pursuit of his services at some point; I just hope that he's happy in London, happy to be managing Spurs and that he sees this as a long-term project.

John Terry:

“You hear people say the Carling Cup doesn’t mean anything - but you try telling that to the players in our dressing room,”

“You can tell by their faces what it means to them. Every year we put a strong side out.

“But we were not good enough overall. As a team, as individuals and collectively we were just not good enough . It is hard to say, but Tottenham deserved it. ”

alright i haven't read any of the other posts (too numerous) but i want to throw my two pennies in.
first of all i want to say congrats to spurs even though i was gutted. They caught chelsea at the right time i reckon two "big" players coming back into he squad after lengthy lay offs was a major factor, which i will discuss.

reasons why spurs won.
1.Spurs played an excellent game even though desperate at the end.

2.Chelsea do not have the chemistry at the moment Terry & lampard coming back was a huge factor.lampard should have been on the bench after such a long lay off,and replaced by malouda.Malouda in that game would have had a different outcome.I just hope he's injured and it wasn't a technical decision or else avram has his first major blunder under him.

3.Anelka should have been subbed in the second half.I love him ,think he's a great player ,but in a big game and still trying to find the natural links between your teammates does not work.

4.I think a fresher drogba essien and kalou would ahve made a lot of difference also.Drogba started slow but soon got back to his ragdolling way's.

all in all an exciting game that had me on the edge of my seat. How many times have we seen spurs be in the ame position and thrown away the agme. That classic v man city comes to mind. There is no doubt that
ramos is for real finding success so soon in the prem is no joke. And spurs can now hav esome belief nad take liverpools spot at 4th down the road.

First of all Congratulation to Spurs and Ramos.

Ramos is a cup man. He likes cup competition very much his tactics are absolutely spot ON.

Watching the Spurs Legend Robbie Keane in Tears after the full time of ET was a priceless moment of the match that legend waited a lot for a trophy and he got one.

When Ramos brought Woodgate in the team everyone was saying that he was injury prone player he spend most of his time on bench. Now he has injured the Chelsea :D and proved all the critics wrong and formed a solid partnership with another Spurs legend King.

Spurs always been my second team although i support Manchester United.

One more thing i want to tell you its a coincident. This year can be much more similar to 1999 (Of cource i am thinking like this because I am a Red Devil :D)

In 1999 : 1. Spurs Won the League Cup
2. Liverpool were out of top 4
3. Biggest of all United Won Treble :D

In 2008 : 1. Spurs Won the League Cup
2. Liverpool are out of top 4 and i hope they will remain out of top 4. :D
3. I am hoping to witness United winning the Treble. ,;)

Tottenham to parade Carling cup to fans before game against PSV on 6th March.

Worst thing we can do IMO, big danger of that match turning into a 90 minute lap of honour.

We need to knuckle down, forget about the Carling Cup and win the match convincingly.

Save the [beep!] for a pointless league match.

Give the players some credit! Do you honestly think they won't have their eyes 100% on the bigger prize?

Having the parade before that PSV game will, if anything, make them even hungrier to succeed, given how sweet the cup final victory tasted. That's how I see it anyway.

I agree there Johaldo. The players will see the reaction from the fans, and I'm sure that will act as an incentive for them to push on and triumph again.

I agree with the legend that is Big Jono. Should keep the party celebrations for some 'nothing game' in the league. Uefa Cup game needs all attention on that game and not have players thinking about how much craic they had celebrating
