Pierre Littbarski has rejected Sydney FC's offer of a new contract. He had been offered a new contract which would have been on drastically reduced terms due to the club's huge financial losses last season. It looked as though he would sign but he became frustrated and angered by some sections of Sydney's management who he felt were being dishonest with him.

Frank Farina, who coached Australia before Hiddink, is the early favourite to take over.

Sydney have named Motherwell's Terry Butcher as their main candidate to replace Littbarski.

Butcher is currently in Australia and is lookinga heavy favourite to take over. A mate was talking to him yesterday and Butcher said he liked the set up and gave a bit of an indication that he would sign.

Apparently Butcher has said it would have to be a huge problem in preventing him taking over Sydney, don't know if this is a good move for Butcher we'll have to wait and see

Terry Butcher is all but confirmed as the new coach of Sydney FC.

The current Motherwell manager has been in Sydney the past week talking to club officials and revealed he is ready to take the helm of the A-League champions.

"I am now on the verge of putting pen to paper on a deal to take over as the new coach of Sydney FC," said Butcher on sportinglife.com.

"Having travelled for what feels like the best part of a week to get here - and undergoing more interviews than a head of state - I expect everything to be finalised and formally announced at a press conference in the next two days."

"Everything would have to go disastrously wrong for me not to complete the deal."

"I have been hugely impressed by the club and their ambitions for the future - and let's be honest, aside from anything else, it is a wonderful opportunity for me and my family and just too big to turn down."
