Charlton push Everton to the last
The battle for the Nationwide Women's Premier League runners-up spot will go to the last day of the season. Charlton won 6-0 at Sunderland, but Everton, who host the Addicks on the final weekend, stayed two points clear of their rivals by beating Leeds 2-1. Charlton need to win on Merseyside to finish second behind champions Arsenal. Sunderland face a play-off meeting with Southern Division runners-up Bristol City. Last-placed Chelsea meet Northern Division Liverpool in a play-off. Everton 2-1 Leeds United England midfielder Fara Williams hit the winner as Everton kept themselves in pole position to finish runners-up. The Toffees went ahead through striker Jody Handley's 27th minute opener and Williams hit the second goal direct from a 51st minute free-kick. The Leeds consolation goal came from a 74th minute penalty, fittingly struck home in her last game before retiring by former England captain Karen Walker. Sunderland 0-6 Charlton Athletic The Addicks kept up their pursuit of Everton with an emphatic victory set up by captain Casey Stoney's first-half goals. The England defender shot the visitors in front after 11 minutes then, following striker Amanda Barr's 31st minute goal, Stoney hit her second three minutes before the break. The Charlton players went wild when central defender Karen Hills grabbed the fourth goal five minutes into the second half. It was the first time ever that Hills, who last Friday celebrated her 31st birthday, had scored a League goal. England striker En Aluko increased the lead in the 56th minute and 17 year-old Ashlee Hincks completed the scoring with her first goal for the club nine minutes from time. Birmingham City 1-0 Fulham Sixteen-year-old striker Penny Andrea made a dream debut as the Blues completed a great run-in to the end of the season. Andrea was sent on as a 73rd minute substitute and seven minutes later hit the only goal of the game from 15 yards following a corner by England winger Karen Carney. Until three weeks ago Birmingham had been in the bottom two throughout the season but finished the campaign with a run of four straight wins. Birmingham finished sixth in the table and Fulham avoided the relegation-promotion play-offs by a single point. Source: BBC. |
