Reading FC Launch Women’s Team

Reading FC have announced the launch of it's first ever women’s football team, which comes after three years of planning and development within the Girls Centre of Excellence. The Girls Centre of Excellence already competes with the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal, Charlton and Fulham. This development will allow competition on a senior level in the near future.

The launch of the Reading FC women’s team comes after a very careful analysis of women’s football in the area and it has been decided to embark on this initiative in partnership with Reading Girls FC. Since their formation in 2001, they have specialised in developing girls and women’s football and are now considered to be one of the leading all female football clubs in the south of England. They have been fundamental to the success of the current Centre of Excellence squads by finding, developing and progressing the best young local talent.

Reading FC’s Football in the Community Scheme oversees the development and progression of women’s football and Lee Herron, Community Scheme manager, said "We are delighted to be involved in such a venture and allow our elite players the opportunity to progress to the Reading FC senior team, whilst still giving the opportunity for grassroots girls football to flourish through Reading Girls FC. We have worked closely with the management team from Reading Girls to establish a professional partnership and a five year roadmap that will see this football team playing at the highest levels. Our Centre of Excellence already boasts a number of girls forming part of the national development squads for England, Republic of Ireland and Wales and we can now provide our players a pathway into playing for Reading FC."

Activities have already commenced to prepare the team for the start of next season and Mark Allen, Chairman of Reading Girls FC, adds "Both of our organisations are
committed to excellence and making this venture a success. There will be plenty of hard work for all involved, but I can see some very exciting times ahead."
