Veteran All Whites striker Vaughan Coveny has reportedly turned down a handsome offer to play with the New Zealand Knights for the 2006/07 A-League season, preferring to stay with his family in Melbourne.

Coveny is currently with the All Whites on their Eurpean tour and scored two goals for New Zealand in Sunday's 3-1 win over Georgia to become the All Whites' record scorer.

The well-seasoned striker has played more than 300 games in the old Australian national league and enjoyed a stint up-front for the Newcastle Jets in the inaugural A-League season but couldn't commit to the Knights at this time.

The Knights are desperate for an experienced striker after Jeremy Brockie left the club to join A-League champions Sydney FC for this season.

The New Zealand team signed versatile forward Malik Buari last week but are looking for another front-man to partner dynamic teenage sensation Michael White who has been signed from Canterbury United in the New Zealand domestic league.
White impressed in a training stint with the Knights last week after a promising trial last November.

"I've been watching Michael since I've been in the country," Knights coach Paul Nevin told AAP.

"He's got a lot of enthusiasm and quite a bit of pace and energy and I think he can make an impact, off the bench, or whatever the circumstances may be."
Ghana-born Buari, who has played with Fulham in the English Championship, will bring a lot of depth and experience to the Knights

"Malik is a versatile player capable of playing in almost any position," Nevin said on the Knights website.

"He is most comfortable out wide and can play as an out and out striker if required. He is very fit, athletic and has good strength."

The Knights play their first pre-season match in the lead up to the 2006/07 A-League season against Newcastle in July.

Would have been a big player for them. While NZ definately need younger players, someone who still has what it takes at the top level should be sought after. A bit of a shame though that we most likely wont be in another A-League team. Was always good with us fans while at Newcastle Smile

NZ need better eficiant players that can keep up with it you can have old men running around on the field now that would be funny but it is ridiculous,NZ shoud scout talent and try to atrract a big star like Sydney FC did and it shows as Sydney FC won the A-leauge with the master Dwight Yorke,A person like Alosi or Cahil could get them going to get some international players so then they can rise through the ranks to become a better team and possibly come away with the A-league Title.

Cahill is about 25 and playing in the EPL. I dont think he would go to NZ (ever) even if he was 55.

Well Yorke and Coveny are the same age anyway, so there's no problem there. While I'm all for youngsters playing, last season showed that at this level of football (where the standard's good, but not world-class) experience is useful. Everyone knows that the Knights need New Zealanders to be a significant part of the roster to get the crowds interested, to build up a stronger team spirit and through that the club can develop and the team can start playing better - otherwise there won't be a club there in a couple of years time.

As for a marquee player, it would be a boost for them but I don't think they could attract (or afford) someone of Yorke's calibre. There's no way Aloisi or Cahill would go there. Cahill's not coming back yet - his career is on the up. If Aloisi were to come back now it would only be to Adelaide to play with his bro and to be closer to his family. But even that's unlikely, he's still got a couple years at the top level in him.

It's good to see them looking at local Kiwi talent as that will benefit the club long-term if some of those players can cut it. I'd like to see them scouting abroad also. Buari seems a good signing, but I hope they don't remain too anglo-centric as they can get better value for money looking outside Europe: Central and South America, Asia, Africa and inject something different into their club and the league as a whole.

Anyway, it's a shame they couldn't get Coveny.
