Sydney FC defender Jacob Timpano faces a race to be fit for the opening match of the 2006/07 A-League season on August 27 after undergoing a hernia operation in Sydney on Friday.

The 20-year-old had bilateral groin surgery and a small single hernia repaired, which had plagued him throughout the final part of the 2005/06 campaign.

Doctors have told the former Australian U/20 international his recovery will take around 10 weeks, leaving him with enough time to be fit for Sydney FC’s first game - the grand final replay against the Central Coast Mariners at Aussie Stadium on August 27.

“The doctors have told us about 10 weeks before he will be fit and ready to play so that falls just before the first game,” said Sydney FC physiotherapist Stan Ivancic.

“That gives us something to aim for but with a player of Jake’s (Timpano’s) age it is best to be cautious.”

Timpano’s surgery was scheduled to allow him to recover from the problem before he spends the next two off-seasons qualifying for, and then hopefully playing in, the 2008 Olympic Games.

Timpano has been an integral part of Graham Arnold’s pre-Olympic Games qualifying build up and with no real break scheduled for the next two years it was thought best for the central defender to go under the knife now.

“He had a slight problem last year that forced him to miss a couple of games and we managed him through, and then went on the Olympic team tour recently, and we thought it best to get it fixed now so he can go into what is a big two years without any problems,” Ivancic said.

Sydney FC will continue the first phase of pre season training up until next Thursday (June Cool before taking a two week break during the opening fortnight of the World Cup.

Hopefully he recovers in time. Big part of Sydney's title success.

Yeah he's important for us and along with several other defenders important for Australia's future. It's guys like Timpano who need to reach that next level soon to help us develop internationally.

Judging by our defence last night he could be drafted in alot quicker than expected if he has a good 2 or 3 years.
