I have no idea if England would have won or lost if Rooney had stayed on, and that's a bit of a moot point now anyway.
But the Ronaldo thing... reminds me of the saying " for every action there is a reaction" I think he maybe brought a lot of this on himself. IF he hadn't done the little wind-up/headbutt thing before the match, IF he hadn't stampeded over to join in the Ref-nag, IF he hadn't done that silly, sly little wink afterwards... ...then his name would never have come into it!!! Nil, zip, nana, zilch (and any other z-words...) The only thing we'd have had to debate was the incident itself - fair/not fair, foul/not foul, red card/yellow card, accident/deliberate etc etc. He chose his own actions, (and not all of them were in the heat of the moment) and now there's the backlash. I can't honestly feel sorry for him - when you're performing on a world stage, then a bit of dignity and restraint can make the difference between a percieved saint or a percieved sinner! ..as so many have found out to their cost.... |

I really don't think that Rooney stepped on him on purpose, not with the ref right next to them; he was pivoting on one foot, weight coming back, looking ahead and down at the ball. You can see his foot came down in a natural position as he shifted to regain footing and (very) unfortunatly there was a man right there. That entire sequence and scuffle for the ball happened in a flash and if you think it was a premeditated action I totally disagree. As to what Renaldo said, I can only guage Rooney's reaction that it was not in his favor, the motive for which could be debated endlessly. Club loyalty vs national loyalty.... well, you can see how that may play out understandably. Compounding this problem is Rooney's "reputation" that made the ref decide must be intentional, and so off he goes.
It may help at this point to clarify that my loyalties are not to the English side so no lacky comments, please. My issue with the Portugal side began with this tournament and reached a fury in the match against the Dutch. Like a few of the teams, Portugal went through there games with a heavy tendancy to do as much acting and diving as possible, but they are not alone. I understand that given the standards fifa has set it certainly pays to at least let yourself go down on any contact and I can accept that. There are only a few sides out there that seem intent on playing with dignity and winning matches because they are the better team and not because they are the better actors. It is the theatrics AFTER they go down that is frustrating. You have all seen matches in this World Cup between teams that refused to play that type of pansy football and refs that refused to reward it.... the result was REAL football, flowing and energized, a real pleasure to watch. Sadly that is not the Portugal way, and since they are not the only ones, a measure of that is acceptable. The game with the Dutch, however, have earned the entire side from this day forward my most bitter regard. I give them all full marks for talent, as they are a technically excellent team, but that is totally offset by the manner in which they conduct themselves on the field. As for the outcome of the English match; things went thier way in the penalties, they won, and that's football. They shouldn't have made it past the Netherlands, but they did. England couldn't pull it together, and so again they are advancing. It's a talented, despicable, candy-assed, disgraceful yet winning team, and that's also football (in some countries). Ronaldo is all of those things as well, and that's the way it goes. If justice lives anywhere in the sport, however, they won't win another match. You Portugese supporters, if you can't see the truth in this I pity your self dillusion, but of course we're football fans, and that's what we do....... support our team no matter what.... thank God for that. Cheers! |

I'd just like to remind everyone that England's greatest (and only) success came courtesy of a dodgy official.
Anyone who constantly complains about referees is a hypocrite of the highest order. Also, why is it always someone elses fault? Over the last few tournaments, various people have been blamed, such as referees, opposition players, the media, the decreasing size of Wagon Wheels, etc etc......Don't you realise that there is one common factor here, namely the English team?? God forbid blaming them, though |

In my opinion, Rooney should be banned from playing football until he grows up. Yes, he is talented at scoring goals, but he has a major anger management problem for which he should be banned from playing.
Ronaldo has a habit of diving, but it seems to be a Portugese player trait. The Celtic-Porta UEFA Cup Winners Cup final was a good example. I wondered if I was watching a football match, or the Olympic diving contest. Having said that, no one but the players involved, and those in the immediate area, will ever know exactly who said what to the referee, so we really don't know that Ronaldo appealed for a red card for Rooney. The thing is, Ronaldo wasn't playing for Man Utd in this game (something that everyone slamming him seems to forget). He was playing for his native country, and he did it quite well. All Rooney did was disgrace himself and the reputation of the English team (and consequently, many of its supporters). I'm sure that public opinion, the English press, and his Man Utd team mates will continue to demonize Ronaldo for what happened, and probably force him to transfer, but the real culprit here was Rooney, and his uncontrollable temper tantrums. If anyone should be punished here, it should be Rooney... not Ronaldo. |

Wonder if part of the problem was everyone pretending he was the England football team and talking about who he'd face in the quarters, forgetting that he has to get there first.
Offensive text removed - yeek In case that went over your head, I was being ironic, in hope that you'd realise how ridiculous you English sound. No vulgarities and no racist remarks please |

Rooney stepped on the nuts on purpose. i can't see any balance trying here..
cristiano ronaldo said he didn't ask for anything but a foul http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TyqmH1RQlYs&eurl= cristiano gave an interview this morning (or the other morning dunno) where he says that what the sun says is [beep!] http://www.abola.pt/nnh/index.asp?op=ver¬icia=104845&d=1&tema=23 (i'll translate according to babelfish) "Barbarities on me and my friend (of the Manchester United) and Rooney friend had been said. How it is possible to say that I was that I helped to banish it? I am not arbitrator to have to be able to banish who I want that he is, nor so little I have moral to convince to show it cards. The arbitrator showed the red card to it because he considered that he had to make it and my participation in this was absolutely null. He liked, also, to leave well clearly that I enters and the Rooney does not exist any type of problem. I insist: no type of problem. In the end of the game, we changed a series of messages for telemóvel and already during the day of yesterday also. This to strengthen that I have an excellent relation with Rooney. Between us the two are everything clarified. By the way, it not only gave the congratulations to me for following in front in the World-wide one, as he said me that we have a great one equips, to continue thus that we would arrive far. It was not angry with me, nor nothing that if seemed. E more: it said to ignore what it was written in the English Press to this intention, that they only want to arrange confusion. It is the custom... As much it as I already we are accustomed. Therefore it is that declarations had appeared as if they were of it, to say that it did not want to come back to play with me in the Manchester. Ai not that it does not want! Clearly that it wants! This is absolutely false, as proper it made question to say me. At last, typical things of English periodicals, the one that already in we accustomed them. That remedy... I guarantee that it is not this that takes off me sleep" |

Ok, I'll try to tone the posts down. The Wimbledon chat was sort of a metaphor, representing the hystericy and hypocracy of many English people, and should not really be read on face value alone.

this is according to The Sun newspaper what England players said about Ronaldo and the part he played in Rooney`s sending off...
Steven Gerrard `i think that sums him up as a person . I saw what Ronaldo did and if was one of my Liverpool teamates i`d be absolutely disgusted by him because there`s no need for that`. If i was playing against a Liverpool colleague and they were involved in a situation like that i`d never try to get them sent off . I saw Ronaldo going over and giving the card gesture and i think he`s bang out of order for that ` Joe Cole `We were told before the finals that players would get booked if they put their hands up like that and made gesture towrads the referee . But it doesn`t seem to be happening . It`s up to FIFA and the game`s authorities to sort it out , or we are going to havve to stoop to their level to beat them . John Terry `It will be interesting in the Man Utd dressing room at the start of nest season . It`s disappointing when you see Premiership players and team-mates running over and putting pressure on the referee like that. A few of the referee`s decisions were shocking . I got a ridiculous booking and Wayne`s red card proved to be vital . Wayne should have had a free kick 15 or 20 seconds before the incident . Any other team they go down and the referee gives a foul . But Wayne stayed on his feet and tried to win the ball , even though he had two defenders fighting him . That is the honesty we show . ` Frank Lampard `Maybe we are a victim of our own honesty in England - and Wayne more than anyone else . He was being fouled but trie dto be strong and carry on . If had happened to one of their players they would have gone down straight away and the refer would have given a free kick .....on Ronaldo`s involvement Lampard went on to say... ` It`s not nice is it . He`s supposed to be a team mate at Man Utd . FIFA have been making a big deal about fair play at this World Cup , but that was certainly not fair play.` So what do you all make of these statements , please watch you language though ....any offensive contest will be removed . |

Completely false statements... dont believe in any of them... some english newspaper are completely stupid, they make up stories... they come up with interviews that were never made.... stupid things. I'm glad that Ronaldo has already talked to Rooney... because now it is not him who's [beep!] with ronaldo... is some english people that canīt take being beaten by their own creation. And i say this because ronaldo learned a lot in england... and most of it with you english.
