dont think so bud.if mr Owen has a blinder world cup he has to be big enough to fill it.one of the best strikers in the world.Did shearer not promise him it after he retires anyway.it wouldnt be the same going to the game without a no 9 shirt.you could always give it to shola Embarassed

Newcastle retiring the Newcastle shirt is like saying that we cant get a replacement, it's also a good bonus for signing new players.

should never be retired. The shirt holds so much history and so much of the club is connected with the famous number 9 shirt.

This legacy needs to continue. I'm against retiring any shirt number to be honest. Just seems a daft idea!

Its a good thing in American Sports but i dont think so in football. I would love to see a new 'Shearer' at SJP. He was truly amazing...

lol might as well retire it now then!! haha Razz
It is a sacred shirt, you just need to get the next big Al!! - it was never going to be an easy task for Newcastle to replace him.

Yes, this practice is spread in such kinds of sports as hockey, there are many shirts under the roofs of ice palaces, I saw it in Moscow: Tretyak, Kharlamov, Bykov, Mikhailov and many others are legends of their teams and their numbers will never be retired.

but it is hockey, they can hang out shirts to show numbers and surnames. but where is the place for shirt on the stadium? not all will see it.
And also if some excellente player has 10's number (that's just an example) and fans want this number never be retired - that is impossible. 10's number in most teams is one of the major numbers, so it would be difficult to freeze it and never allow anyone to use it.

Shearer is one of my favourite players, and, of course, I want his number to be always Al's number. And I voted for the second option. but I understand that it is more difficult than in hockey, for example, and less probably.

would be a fitting gesture to a legend like shearer but we cud never retire the most famous number 9 shirt in football.
