Why should the English media and commentators be impartial?
I heard the Portugese commentator and he was far from impartial |

If the English media can't be impartial, at least it should have respect and if possible do not lie. Is this asking too much? Maybe. You have to sell.

Tabloids all over the world are not impartial and tabloids all over the world exaggerate things , even in Portugal!

yes Rooney_79586.shtml'>Wayne Rooney was stupid, but maybe it was a mistake to have him playing in the first place he was clearly not fit and not upto the role he was asked to play, its it not a case he has been badly advised he is still a young guy learning his trade ,but he is a sponsors dream and maybe he was pushed to play
as him playing would boost all his sponsors products ,and in football nowadays money is the top dog. |

The media should be impartial because that's what's required for their job (unless we have different concepts for what news should be like). If you want to hear "We lost but it wasn't our fault - it was Ronaldo's. We played great and deserved to be Champions but Portugal bought the referee and we lost. Rooney is a victim of Ronaldo's betrayal." you should go to the streets and interview the irrational supporters (don't get me wrong with the word "irrational", I just think that fans always try to see things the way they like and not how the facts are). The weird thing is that that kind of sentences is also written in the press (well, at least in the tabloids - I sincerely hope that the "important" newspapers can write something better) and this is what I can't understand. Another thing that shocked me was the awful things that were written about Portugal - the country itself, not even the Portuguese football squad!!!- before the match. I had already read quite a few articles written by English journalists that criticised, always with a feeling of superiority, the country, but mixing football matches with whatever English think that might be wrong in Portugal (country) is of a such low level that it makes me sick. About the commentators. That's right, they're there to express their personal opinion - but based on the facts! And lets face it: Rooney attacked Ricardo Carvalho (as you can well see in the video) and he was sent off. It's just as simple as that. Why try to find a scapegoat for what happened? And I'm not saying that the Portuguese commentators are all impartial, but at least the majority of them has no problems with saying when the teams play well and badly, when the players do awful things like attacking their oponents, faking fouls or being incorrect in any way... even if it takes saying something like: "We were sent off of the tournament and we're the only ones to blame!"; "Our player attacked another during the match - he should be punished for putting at stake the name of the squad" or even "We weren't good enough". There are obviously exceptions (as I'm sure there are in England!) but, trust me, if the Portuguese team plays badly or if Ronaldo attacks a player (he has done that already, unfortunately), the newspapers and the TV commentators are the first ones to admit it, to criticise them hardly and, if that's the case, congratulate the other team. At least that's what I'm used to and probably that's why I got so surprised when I read some English newspaper titles and watched that video in which BBC commentators spoke as if they were mere fans trying to blame the eternal England's scapegoat - everyone but them. |

Portugal V England |
|
I have heard all sorts of different opinions on this subject. I have never liked Ronaldo, ever since euro 2004, you can see it in his eyes, hes a scheming sod. But I do think he's a talented player. I don't think that hes necesserily to blame for Rooney being given a red card though. That is down to the ref and his much to be desired calling of the match.
Rooney was not at fault, he was being attacked by two players, he dosen't just throw himself on the ground and keel over, like some other players do, when being opposed in such a way. Watching the footage back in slow motion, you can clearly see that Rooney did step on his groin, but he didn't do it intentionally, he was pulled backwards (put yourselves in his position). By the time this happend the ref should have whistled and given a free kick. I mean did the guy have his head up his arse or something? I don't know why Rooney was given a red card, if it was for the 'stomp' then it was rediculous and the ref was at fault for poor judgement. If it was for the 'powerful shove' to the weed then again the ref needs his head testing. I refer to the point someone made about portugal being the better team and thats why they won, well with a man down we held our own pretty damn well didn't we? But penalties for England were always going to be dreadful. Paul Robinson in my opinion shouldn't be in goal for England, Hes good, but not at international standard. I have always thought that its so much pressure for the goal keepers too, all the work of the match etc coming down to penalties. I can;t even begin to imagine how it must be for the goalies. But there is no doubting that Ricardo is an excellent goal keeper, in penalties alone, portugal won and they deverved to. But looking at the match overall, nah, I don't think portugal really did exceptionally well for people to say that they kicked our butts. I do think that that formation and system was wrong though, the 4-5-1 formation. I didn't work, Sven should have seen we were struggling again Equador and changed it. I think we would have won if we had opted for a different formation. We had alot of shots and good possession of the ball throughout the match. I don't think that Christiano Ronaldo is to blame for this outcome but more so the formation of the play, Paul Robinson was not great at the all important time. Also the ref throughout was rubbish, for both teams, don't think he was bias but he just didn't have a clue. Sack him!!! Giving John Terry a yellow card for a mid air collision with another player, rubbish, yeah the portugese player came off worse but it wasn't intentional, did he come off worse or is it the stick to the ground for a free kick syndrome? I am proud of our lads, they aren't [beep!] wimps! I do however think that Ronaldo should grow some balls, call himself a man? I honestly have never seen such a wimp in all my life, stick the little [beep!] on a rugby field, he'd last seconds, if he's lucky. He is sly ( headbutt, wink), I hope Rooney tears him a new *ahem* Rant over! |

Re: Portugal V England |

He did something as despicable as throwing himself to the floor. He never droped the ball even when he realized he was making a foul. He imprisoned the ball and with his hands pushed the two players that were fighting for the ball. If he couldn´t keep it he had to leave it. But he was just satisfied when he bruised portuguese player´s balls. He was not being attacked, they were just doing their job, marking Rooney and trying to take him the ball. Nobody except Rooney pushed or had low fairplay... |

He didn't intentionally stand on his balls, he was dragged backwards, (did you actually see the match?) Our players (when faced with 2 on 1 tackling) don't just give up when being constantly tripped and kicked, we keep going, thats what he did, he got dragged backwards... I think theres alot of dirty playing and the players should be ashamed! I was saying that the ref should have given a free kick before that incident could have happend... There is no consistancy with the refereeing... Yeah portugal have strong defence and they are a good team and we lost to them again on penalties, fair and square but that dosen't mean that the match was fair... I know the ref wasn't bias but he needs a kicked up the arse. |

This is total rubbish. I also repeat; If, 2 seconds into the 15. Rooney goes down and grabs the ball when he was FOULED, then england have no problem with any red cards |

We don't go down un-naturally, but it would be nice to get a free kick when we are fouled, regardless of whether we go down clutching our faces or not!!
