Angry Brazilian football fans have destroyed a seven-metre tall statue of World Player of the Year Ronaldinho following the national team's World Cup quarter-final exit at the hands of France.

The statue, made out of resin and iron, in the southern town of Chapeco in Santa Catarina state, was burnt in the night of Saturday to Sunday, after the Selecao's 1-0 defeat to Les Bleus, according to the local mayor's spokesperson.

"All that's left is a burnt out metal skeleton of a statue," the source said.

The monument, depicting Ronaldinho with a ball, was inaugurated two years ago to celebrate the player's first World Footballer of the Year award in 2004.

The Barcelona forward, who is from the neighbouring Rio Grande do Sul state, was a major disappointment for Brazil during the tournament, failing to shine as he had done all season in his club's colours.

Shocked Wow! They have certainly made their feelings clear, that is a giant sign of disrespect towards a player! Like stealing one of his trophies, well out of order.

It's a shame that Brazilian fans always expect so much of the National team to do so well at major comps.

It's sad that a nation can go from loving a player to hating him just because of a few bad games. In their eyes, he was the man to win them the WorldCup and not only did he not, he played poor in all their games.

I hope he regains form for the start of la liga because he can be so amazing to watch.

He's still the best player in the world in my opinion.

Cool He is such a good player he will just use this as a reason to prove everyone wrong. I believe he's the Zidane of the future.

Imagine if that happened in the leagues , each week there would be riots and all that . We all know what Ronaldinho can do , he just did not play that well during the World Cup .

There have been worst cases of fan outbursts tho.

Remember that Colombian who got killed after USA '94?

I can't remember his name.

People are very upset with Ronaldinho but it seems to be a short term feeling.
But as for Roberto Carlos, he will have to stay in Spain for quite sometime.

Well, i don't think there is such a threat but the Brazilian press and most Brazilians are blaming the defeat on him. Everyone thinks that he ddidn't make an effort to win the game and throughout the cup he lacked motivation and enthusiasm. He should've left the team and open way to younger players.
He is being called by the press as mercenary.....

He must be a bit worried because he didn't go to Brazil after the match as most players did. He decided to stay in Spain. He'll definitely need police protection to walk around while the Cup is still on people's mind. Not that he'll get shot or something like that but some agry supporters will probably confront him.

I posted here the other day but i'll show again the pictures that have been flooding emails in Brazil...there is one showing him lying close to the bench in the match against Japan. I can't find it.

Hi leandro! I understand your feelings but you know, it is very common to accuse players to be mercenaries and to play football only for money and not for honor after a defeat. Unfortunatly we have known that for 4 years with the french team...

And I'm very sad for Ronaldinho, he doesn't deserve so much hatred Sad

ALLEZ LES BLEUS!!!

I've not heard any of this stupid act. Is this true?
I hate when people (fanatics) have this kind of behaviour. More, I get scared.
"One day you love them, next day you hate them". It's just not fair. The players are human beings too.

There first match i though Carlos was Brazils best player and people call England fans saw losers but atleast we gave our fans a polite applause they tottaly booed them but i liked how Cafu still gave the angry mob a joyful wave.

I havent seen the Brazillian users we have on this forum for a while i wonder why?
