Zinedine Zidane won the Golden Ball award for the World Cup's best player, despite being dismissed for headbutting Marco Materazzi in the final.

France captain Zidane polled 2012 points in the vote by journalists covering the tournament.

The midfielder, 34, beat Italians Fabio Cannavaro (1977 points) and Andrea Pirlo (715 points) in the ballot.

He played his last game on Sunday, scoring a penalty and being red-carded as France were defeated on penalties.

The former international player of the year and 1998 World Cup winner announced last month that he was retiring from football after the tournament.

On Sunday, he put France ahead from the spot in the opening minutes but was sent off after slamming his head into Materazzi's chest during the tense second period of overtime, which ended 1-1.

It was to be his last act as a professional player and, with the French missing his prowess in the ensuing penalty shootout, Italy went on to claim the World Cup title.

Germany goalkeeper Oliver Kahn won the Golden Ball in 2002, while other previous winners include Brazilians Ronaldo (1998) and Romario ('94), Italy's Salvatore Schillaci ('90) and Argentine great Diego Maradona.

Germany striker Miroslav Klose was the Golden Shoe winner for the tournament's leading scorer with five goals.

Well he was one of the few players that really stood out in this tournament, had a huge advantage in his team making it to the final. I think some of the Germans were pretty impressive too.

But congratulations to Zidane, hopefully this will be remembered as his final hurrah to football and not the ugly scene in the final that got him sent off.

I don't think that 1 really great game (Brazil) makes an MVP. Should have been Cannavaro.

That's it, give him a prize, too.

Not only did he ONLY play ONE good game (against a mediocre Brazil), but he was also the author of the most violent action of the World Cup.

Yes, Mr Blatter, I know you were sad that Italy won (you even deserted the awarding of the Cup), but you could've been more realistic here...

I would have accepted any other of the ten nominations for the golden ball, but NOT ZIDANE.

I, too, think Cannavaro was the best player of the tournament. He was always there, CONSISTENT (not like Zidane), he never had a lack of FORM (neither physical, nor emotive - not like Zidane).

But, Blatter....well, that'll give him some consolation!!!

Yeah, don't quite agree with that prize either. Rolling Eyes

He was an awesome player and one of the best (if not the best) of his generation, but he didn't glow, in my opinion, in this WC, that much to deserve the prize. I'd give it to Cannavaro or Buffon.

Besides, if C. Ronaldo wasn't given the Best Young Player award for having lacked fair-play, despite having all the conditions to win it and a lot of talent (as FIFA said), what criteria was used now for giving the Golden Ball to Zidane? Rolling Eyes

For me, Cannavaro is the player of the tournament.
He also represents the mighty "denfense" character of this championship.

Zidane was one of the best players this game ever seen, but he wasn't the best in this tournament. Even in the french team, I would prefer Vieira.

It has benn Podolski, because he scored 3 goals and helped his team imo better than Ronaldo, but you are right. The argument leaves the next big ? on Zizous award!

i think it was a silly decision to award Zidane it...he did outshine a lot of players, but for me there were far better players than him but because these players only defend it seems they hardly get a mention....

how about these players??

Cannavaro (Italy)
Gattuso (Italy)
Lahm (Germany)
Klose (Germany)
Pirlo (Italy)
Ballack (Germany)

I might be wrong but I thought this was decided by media pundit votes, not by FIFA.

What the hell did Ballack do this tournament? Most of the time he was lazing about in midfield losing possession!

Zidane deserved it.

I thought Klose should of won it though.

"The voting for the award was carried at half-time in the final, which France went on to lose on penalties. Zidane, 34, topped a poll of journalists covering the event with 2,012 points, ahead of Italian pair Fabio Cannavaro (1,977) and Andrea Pirlo (715)." The Guardian

Doest it satisfy all the conspiracy theorists ??

In Portugal we use to say: things cant be good for greeks and trians at same time!

There's always antagonic opinion about the things.

Personally i think there's 3 kinds of players: The sh!t ones, the medium ones and the ones like Zidane.
He simple makes everything he wants with a ball. Very strong and an awesome tecnique.

I think its deserved!
