No you're right no child should brought up believing "headbutting" is appropriate behavior. They also shouldn't be brought up thinking that you can win by taunting and racism. It's the same thing. How can you defend Materazzi nastiness just because he didn't do something physically violent but was completely disrepectful and an embarressment to the game. He deserves punishment.

Yes, he does. It should be inspected and he should probably get banned for the next few matches. (He is a lunatic anyway, that should be suspended for lifetime, but more for his fouls).
I am not defending his behaviour, but i think that Zidane was stupid to react like that. (Especially in a World Cup Final) And Trash talk isn't nice, but it is part of the game. If it is getting really private or something, it is not ok and should be punished. |

Re: Disgusted by football |

Completely unrealistic and unenforceable!! You would have patrols of officials walking up and down the lines, watching for players lips to move???? "Ref! Ref! He SPOKE to me! Make him stooooppp!!!! "No I didn't. I was singing my own national anthem/giving myself a pep talk/trying to remember the words of the latest James Blunt single." or "Ref! I kicked the ball out and he didn't even say thank-you!" "Ref, tell the other player thank-you as I'm not allowed to speak to him." or "Ref, he called me a stupid @ss.." "No I didn't, I told my team-mate he'd just played a stupid pass..." Ya see? It won't work. It'd make more sense if highly paid and respected players learnt to control their tempers better when in public.... |

Ok Carrie obviously that is not what was meant at all. Some of the calls are blatant and everyone knows that when as act becomes punishable it will happen less because the players will be more careful of what they say. Right now they can say anything they want which isn't right. I think you missed the point all together.
And by the way this was a blatant verbal attack that everyone saw and is easy to reaccess. |

Not at all. The point is - it is unenforceable as things stand. Whether from the trivial examples I gave, or the more serious, who is to say what a player said? One player can then say he recieved the biggest insult in the world. How to prove it? Is he telling the truth? Or is he lying to gain an advantage over a rival. I am suggesting that 'verbal diving' will become the new physical diving. Do we really need more of this sort of cr@p on the field? For every new rule that you invent to penalise the opposition, someone somewhere will find a way to try and play it to their advantage. Certainly, it's unpleasant to wind up the opposition, but if every player learnt to ignore, ignore, ignore, there would be no point in winding anyone up, as it would have no effect. Making a tactic totally useless is far more effective than giving it ammunition!
But it is easy though? So far all we have seen are two players exchanging talk. Both of them. It is impossible to determine yet what was said. Conjecture and speculation is so far all we have heard. What we DID see was a blatant PHYSICAL attack. The image will stick in the minds of people who saw it. Actions speak louder than words. |

I agree with you that this world cup was not a very good world cup... Unfortunatly this year is more a defensive world cup. But there are many teams that were good looking teams! Ivory Coast, Germany, Spain, Argentina, etc. Germany, with its beautiful football could reach the semi-final, so it's not impossible at all for a beautiful team to earn the world cup!!! Maybe in 2010...
I just hope that Greece won't be there in the next world cup as it was in this world cup |
